2003 SD Asian Film Festival

Posted by MikeyMike at 02:24 AM on October 1, 2003 as a favorite post.

Yes, it's that time of year once again! The San Diego Asian Film Festival runs from October 2-5 here in our fair city by the sea. It just happens to correspond with Mike's 4 day "weekend" this year too! Want to see their "trailer"? (1.9mb mpeg):

2003 SD Film Festival Trailer

Their web site is at: SDAFF.ORG

One movie I know I want to see is Balzac And The Little Chinese Seamstress. This is a Chinese/French collaboration that I didn't even know had been made into a film! The book by Dai Sijie is wonderful! I'd bet you'll like it too...

Balzac Film Page

I must say that I was intrigued enough by the cover to buy the book! Check it out at Amazon: Little Seamstress Book

I read this book during my The Way Home enthusiasm, a Chinese film by Zhang Yimou (Not One Less, To Live, The Story of Qiu Ju) staring a very young and radiant Zhang Ziyi (of Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon fame). Everyone I showed it to has loved it! It's a pleasure showing wonderful films to those who would never ordinarily get to see them! I suspect that these two films would make an excellent double feature since they are both based in Mao era rural China and tell simple but powerful stories.

And representing the increasingly internationally praised Korean film industry is My Tutor Friend. It's the sequel the enormously funny and popular My Sassy Girl. She needs to make college money by tutoring the biggest delinquent in school... Played for slapstick laughs!

Well, there are just too many more that look good. An embarrassment of riches! More news as it happens...

One thing about saying you're gonna do something in "print" is that if you don't do it, you feel even worse! On the other hand, it's probably a good motavating factor!

So, let's see if I can take it out to Torrey Pines and catch my SDAFF movies!

BTW, if you ever get to San Diego (and even if you live here already) Local Wally's is the site to see for all your Tourista needs...

Gratuitous Baby Emma Pic Dejour!

Posted by MikeyMike at 11:21 PM on October 1, 2003.

Well, nothing like a baby picture to warm the cockles of our hardened hearts, hum? I remember hearing something on one of those Discovery Channel type shows about how babies are designed by nature to attract our attention by their sounds and look (that's why we gravitate to things with big heads and big eyes? And why possums will never be considered "cute"?)

Good survival strategy! And you thought they where helpless! lol

Cold!

Posted by MikeyMike at 03:02 PM on October 2, 2003.

First of all, you have to know that San Diegans are the most weather spoiled people around! It suddenly got cold last night... maybe in the high 50's! Burrr!! lol

After you get back up off the floor from rolling with laughter, let me tell you that this weather front also brought some cloudy, non-optimal picture taking views... On the brighter side, I got to roll over and go back to sleep! The famous story here is that surfers would roll over, open one eye, check the waves on the Internet Surf Report, and if they wheren't good, go back to sleep!

open your eye and check the waves...

First Night San Diego Asian FIlm Festival

Posted by MikeyMike at 11:05 PM on October 2, 2003 as a favorite post.

Well sports fans, I made it to the opening night of the Asian Film Festival to see Balzac and The Little Chinese Seamstress. It is being held at the Madstone Theater in Mission Valley, plus other city locations. This is a mostly "Art House" film place. Quite a nice venue. I had never been here before, as the traffic tends to be pretty crazy at times, compared to my usual Clairemont/UTC/La Jolla haunts...

I took quite a few pictures, which will hopefully be available tomorrow! They are mostly crowd pictures and something I didn't expect: The Jing Institute of Chinese Martial Arts performance! That was simply amazing! More on that later.

I arrived early to take in the ambiance of the occasion. It was pretty low key, but there was the buzz of anticipation in the air. There where some Asian film scene personalities about and many people there seemed acquainted. It seems that the Asian film scene here is small, but knowledgeable. I did talk to a few film fans that where from out of town. LA, San Francisco, Hawaii and one from New York. Combining a trip to lovely San Diego and excellent films is a great idea! See you in 2004?

When movie time rolled around, the theater was about half filled, (this is a six theater multi-plex and other films where playing too) which wasn't too surprising I guess, but as is often the case for "art" films, you could tell that everyone there were going to be enthusiastic viewers! No excessive talking or roaming about, no cell phones going off... It was mostly a young crowd, including some of the martial arts performers I had just seen.

I'd say about 70% of the crowd was "Asian" (as in having some Asian heritage). Most people in this group are second or third generation and are about as Americanized as can be. But most have been raised with a strong feeling for their "roots". And increasingly are actively embracing the culture, even visiting and making ties in the "mother" country... I keep implying that there is an "Asian community", which isn't exactly untrue, but I think it would be more correct to say Chinese Community, Filipino community, etc.

The film was introduced by a senior person in the SDAFF which was interesting, as he had some anecdotes about meeting people involved in the film.

As always, Mike would recommend reading the book first. Not unexpectantly, the film departs from the book in many ways. But they aren't objectionable and where probably required to meet the films cinematic needs. For me, it was like having the memory of an old friend come back to life.

All of the characters were very well cast indeed. Especially the crucially important "Little Seamstress" played Zhou Xun, since she has to believably win the love of both main characters. She has the perfect winning personality in this role. The natural beauty of the landscape and excellent cinematography will leave you astonished!

Making overtly political films in China, even today, is pretty much impossible. So (mainland) Chinese movie makers have concentrated on telling "people" stories, and Little Seamstress is certainly from that genre. The extreme repression of the Mao era is certainly glossed over, even made humorous. Points are made subtly.

I don't want to give the plot away, but the transforming power of literature, even among peasants, is the central theme here. It is delightfully amusing as well as profound. You see how the party Head Man accepts the music of Mozart (banned - like all Western music) after he is told the name of the tune is "Mozart Thinking of Mao"!

This might be a hard movie to find. I didn't know it had even been made! But if you get the chance, I think you'll love this little film as much as I did! And do read the book. It has been translated into 25 languages...

Well, I'm very tired... I'll save my entry about the Jing Institute performance for tomorrow. I have a fully day of (perhaps) Torrey Pines, Company picnic and mo' movies to see! lol

Friday at the San Diego Asian FIlm Festival

Posted by MikeyMike at 12:06 AM on October 4, 2003.

LOL! Excuse the typos on my replies to Jen and Mitch! It's been a long day. Now, I feel like I should be doing something to amuse my readers everyday... Don't worry, I'm sure I'll get over it!

I was hoping to have pics for tonight... Long's Drugs let's you deposit film for processing all night... Of course the 1 Hour slot does not exist... so have to wait till 6pm Saturday for the Opening Night pics... I took some some more tonight when I went to see Book of Rules and will be taking pictures today also. The Jing martial arts center is having a 2 year anniversary open house at 2pm. I want to make that too. The Grand Master (or what ever he's called) was one of the martial arts consultants for Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon! I will be a busy little beaver tomorrow!

I think that I should wait unitil I get all my pictures back to write up the rest of my SDAFF adventures, don't you? This is why you should have a digital camera instead!

from The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho

Posted by MikeyMike at 06:32 AM on October 4, 2003.

At that moment, it seemed to him that time stood still, and the Soul of The World surged within him. When he looked into her dark eyes, and saw that her lips were poised between a laugh and silence, he learned the most important part of the language that all the world spoke - the language that everyone on earth was capable of understanding in their heart. It was love. Something older than humanity, more ancient than the desert. Something that exerted the same force whenever two pairs of eyes met, as had theirs at the well. She smiled, and that was the certain omen - the omen he had been awaiting, without even knowing he was, for all his life...

It was the pure Language of the World. It required no explanation, just as the universe needs none as it travels through endless time. What the boy felt at that moment was that he was in the presence of the only woman in his life, and that, with no need for words, she recognized the same thing...

Because when you know that language, it's easy to understand that someone in the world awaits you, whether it's in the middle of the desert or in some great city. And when two such people encounter each other, and their eyes meet, the past and the future become unimportant. There is only that moment, and the incredible certainty that everything under the sun has been written by one hand only. It is the hand that evokes love, and creates a twin soul for every person in the world. Without such love, one's dreams would have no meaning. Maktub, thought the boy.

I should be sleepy, but that's no fun! I got back some SD Asian Film Festival pics today. No film scanner yet, so I just scaned the prints. Not so good quality, but you'll get the idea. It was over too soon, and I had to work Sunday - the last day! Quite an event.

If you need a reason to come to San Diego when it's getting all blustery where you are in October, come on out for SDAFF2004!

And who didn't envy that kid on Flipper??

Diviner than the Dolphin is nothing yet created, for indeed they were aforetime men and lived in cities along with mortals, but…they exchanged the land for the sea, and put on the form of fishes; but even now, the righteous spirit of men in them preserves human thoughts and human deeds- Oppian, Halieutica

Ok, he was a bit of an ass when he was on top... but that doesn't mean he couldn't have a good, meaningful tune, right lil' sista'?

DANCE LITTLE SISTER - Terence Trent D'Arby
(words and music by Terence Trent D'arby)

get up outta' your rockin chair grandma!
or rather would you care to dance grandmother?

hey you! give up the ghost
that's haunting you now
shout it out
don't let it stay inside
and eat you alive
make up your mind
don't you want to stay
this side of the line
i can assure you
when you're my age
you'll learn
from all you've left behind
(you've got to)

dance little sister
don't give up today
hang on till tomorrow
i don't wanna hear you're late
dance little sister
don't give up today
hang on till tomorrow
don't give up your stay

say now share the weight
and lay your cross down
and let the long reaching arm
of hope bring you around
it ain't easy but giving up
is the easy thing to do
time is on your side
would you just watch the clock
and let it tick for you

dance little sister
don't give up today
hang on till tomorrow
i don't wanna hear you're late
dance little sister
don't give up today
hang on till tomorrow
don't give up your stay

A Unicorn?!?

Posted by MikeyMike at 01:48 AM on October 17, 2003.

wtf!

uni
You are Form 3, Unicorn: The Innocent.

"And The Unicorn knew she wasn't meant to
go into the Dark Wood. Disregarding the advice
given to her by the spirits, Unicorn went
inside and bled silver blood.. For her
misdeed, the world knew evil."

Some examples of the Unicorn Form are Eve
(Christian) and Pandora (Greek).
The Unicorn is associated with the concept of
innocence, the number 3, and the element of
water.
Her sign is the twilight sun.

As a member of Form 3, you are a curious
individual. You are drawn to new things and
become fascinated with ideas you've never come
in contact with before. Some people may say
you are too nosey, but it's only because you
like getting to the bottom of things and
solving them. Unicorns are the best friends to
have because they are inquisitive.

From the Better Late Than Never Department: Here are a couple of exclusive pictures from the Q&A after the screening of the send up of all martial arts stereotypes... Kung Phooey! How can you not like a film with characters like "Low Fat" and "Non Fat" and the oh-so-cute "Sue Shee" (get it??) lol

Writer/Director/Producer Darryl Fong and star Joyce Thi Brew (playing Helen Hu) along with the AFF Film Selection Director and a local Asian newscaster where there. Darryl and Helen where great (and funny!) at fielding questions from the enthusiastic audience! My only surprise is why was I the only person taking pictures?? Another stereotype debunked! They also let slip that there may be a deal for general release of the film soon! Mikey gives it "two snaps up!"

Anggun

Posted by MikeyMike at 03:34 PM on October 17, 2003.

Funny how you get used to having readers, and think something's wrong if you don't for a while... perhaps another Baby Emma pic is in order?! lol

Anyway, careful readers will have noticed that my "music of the moment" has often been Anggun's Deep Blue Sea.

THIS JUST IN: ANGGUN WILL BE HOSTING THE WORLD MUSIC AWARDS ON THE WB NETWORK IN THE US AND CANADA! THAT'S SATURDAY, OCTOBER 18TH. CHECK YOU LOCAL LISTINGS, AS THEY SAY...

Here's my local info:

8:00 PM Channel 5 KSWB Saturday, 18

World Music Awards 120 mins.

The 15th annual event, taped Oct. 12 at the Sporting Club in Monte Carlo, Monaco. Release Year: 2003

Anggun is my biggest find in the "World" music scene. Yeah, I know everyone has heard of Snow On The Sahara, her US hit and her American tour with Sarah McLachlan's first Lilllith Faire concerts. She even came to San Diego! But very few people I talk to today register more than a glimmer of recognition.

She is the biggest selling Asian singer in the West is all. She's been based in Paris, but she has a new record deal and is moving to Canada soon (you lucky hosers! ;>) She sings in French, English and her native Bahasa Indonesian. What a wonderful voice she has, in any language!

You can hear this on Deep Blue Sea, not even her own song, but a guest sing for the UK Electronia group Deep Forest. You can hear this tune by looking in my Content tab. She has been doing quite few guest appearances in other performers’ music like for Italian Piero Pelù's Amore Immaginato (Imagined Love). That's one hot video too! I'll gather some links for her and keep updating this entry, but for now here are the lyrics for Deep Blue Sea... Isn't Indonesian a beautiful singing language?

Deep Blue Sea - Anggun/Deep Forest-Music Detected

Jangankan biar hilang semua yg telah di beri...
Jangankan pergi rasa manusiawi dan naluri diri...
Biar bumi tetap bersinar di bawah mentari...
Jangankan lenyap keindahan diri kesucian hati...
Agar kita tetap bersinar di bawah mentari...

(Chorus)
Let there be joy and harmony
from the roof of sky above
to the deep blue sea...
All that we have under the sun
Singing loud in unheard sound
telling us that we are one

Anggun World Multimedia Page

And La Ligne des Sens (My Sensual Mind) is about the most seductive song I've ever heard!

Sur moi, pour tout, pour rien
J'apprends par coeur
Le règlement de ton coeur
Pour croire, si peu, si bien
Ta voix, ta main
Aux lignes qui se fondent
En une seule évidence
La ligne des sens

World Music Awards 2003

Posted by MikeyMike at 08:58 PM on October 18, 2003.

It seemed a bit rushed and cheesy, but I got to See Anggun and Jane March (clothed), and saw some singers that I hadn't seen before... Like the Dutch singer "Do", and now I know what a T.A.T.U. is...

Pink was looking particularly scary - they even had to put a censor thingy over her tits, so presumably Europeans had the dubious pleasure of seeing 'em... She is a good singer though, have to give her that...

Blu Cantrell was hot... Definitely has a set of pipes! I think the mini skirt/thunder thighs combo thing was more than a bit tragic... Who advises/packs these people into outfits like this?

Funny to do your blog while you're actually watching the show...

Anna Kournikova didn't embarrass herself, which was surprising; Jean Claude Van Dam was a pompous ass, as per usual... Where has this David Bisbal been hiding? I am Kazaa'ing him, even as we speak...

Robbie Williams (yeah!) was up for best something, but lost to 50 Cents (could it be you won if you promised to show up??) He did win best Brit Dude and Dido won Brit Dudette.

Think you ladies should check out David Bisbal from Spain! Jen, are you listening?? Def. knows how to shake his groove thing.. lol

Oliver Cheatham did a "My Grandpa's on Soul Train" type performance.... Actually, he was pretty good!

The lovely Laura Pausini sang her heart out. Damn, she is a passionate singer! Check her out... She does cross over Spanish songs, besides her native Italian and even has a few English songs, like the wonderful Looking For An Angel which she sings in the movie Message In A Bottle... and she was on the OST for Pokémon!

Official Laura Site

Macy Gray presented the legendary George Benson. Guess he needed the exposure, so he can get work performing at Indian gambling casinos, 'cause even though he's still good, it looked like he was sleepwalking through it... I guess 40 years performing takes it out of ya'! He was also the Male Legend winner this year.

Damn! Best Swiss/Middle Eastern/German and French performances where reduced to a 2 minute clip! lol

Chaka Khan was awesome! Another "Legend' Award winner singing I Feel for You and I'm Every Woman... One of the few ladies truly meriting the accolade of Diva! I think that at 3 or 4 cows died to make that leather outfit she was wearing though!

Mariah Carey performed. 150 million records sold! As well as flipping out in a most public way... See people, you can only push yourself so hard, or...Hope she gets back on track! She won the "Diamond" award from Prince Albert.

50 Cents won Bigest Seller 2003 (over 10 million copies) and perfomed... Funny watching White Europeans getting in touch with their ghetto thang! lol Their "hood" is on the front of their Beemers?!

So, there you have it folks - MikeyMikes Curmudgeonly World Music Award Review, 2003!

Berry Good!

Posted by MikeyMike at 11:30 PM on October 19, 2003.

I have the weirdest schedule! I guess if you're online to the world that doesn't matter so much...

Sunday is my weirdest day, schedule-wise. Monday thru Wednesday I work from 3PM to 1:30AM... but, get this, on my first work day - Sunday, I work from 10AM to 9PM! Kinda' throws you off!

I tend to keep my second shift hours, even on my days off (THU/FRI/SAT). I find it hard to get to sleep before about 4-5AM. This means on Sunday mornings, I am screwed sleep-wise! Even with beau coup coffee, I am pooped by the end of my shift, especially if I have to think that day! lol

The point of this ramble is to thank the fine folks at Marie Callender's in my San Diego neighborhood of Clairemont! They close at 10PM on Sundays, but if I can get my ass in there before they lock the doors, they always take care of me like time doesn't matter. Even though they have a lot of cleaning to do and preparation for the next day. It's a great group of people. Seems like you can only find that in neighborhood places, sort of like on Cheers... So, if you are in the area, please stop by and tell 'em Mike sent you!

It's past the fresh fruit pies time o' the year, but all the other pies are good too. $5.99 for any pie in October!! Hungry yet?

And a special hello to a certain someone that has recently taken up Scrap Booking, in addition to all her many other activites!...

It amazes me how hardworking some San Diegans are. Many are going to school and working two jobs! I feel lazy in comparison!

Snow on The Sahara

Posted by MikeyMike at 12:30 PM on October 22, 2003.

Hi sports fans, hum... just heard a new version of Anggun's Snow on The Sahara! It's an acoustic version from the Lonely Hearts (a Danish movie) OST. I will post the mp3 to my contents area if anyone else wants to hear it...

oh, btw, if you get something from my Contents area, could you let me know? So that I don't hog too much space on things that aren't needed... Thanks!

What are the odds of me going to the music store, looking through the Danish Movie OST section (lol), and saying "Hey! here's something I've never heard of, so let me plunk down $18.99 for it!!"

This is so Not Going To Happen! Even the best record stores don't have crap that's the least bit unusual! And they think World Music is bagpipes and stuff like that! lol Not to mention the fact that usually you have to be crazy to buy something you never heard before! And finally, go up to your local smart-ass music store sales critter, and ask him/her/it to direct you to the Danish Movie OST section!!

So, just maybe there is a good reason to D/L music on The Internet??

Only tell me that you still want me here
When you wander off out there
To those hills of dust and hard winds that blow
In that dry white ocean alone

Lost out in the desert
you are lost out in the desert

But to stand with you in a ring of fire
I'll forget the days gone by
I'll protect your body and guard your soul
From mirages in your sight

Lost out in the desert
You are lost out in the desert

If your hopes scatter like the dust across your track
I'll be the moon that shines on your path
The sun may blind our eyes, I'll pray the skies above
For snow to fall on the sahara

Just a wish and I will cover your shoulders
With veils of silk and gold
When the shadows come and darken your heart
Leaving you with regrets so cold

Lost out in the desert
you are lost out in the desert

If your hopes scatter like the dust across your track
I'll be the moon that shines on your path
The sun may blind our eyes, I'll pray the skies above
For snow to fall on the sahara

If that's the only place where you can leave your doubts
I'll hold you up and be your way out
And if we burn away, I'll pray the skies above
For snow to fall on the sahara

Small Voices

Posted by MikeyMike at 02:09 AM on October 24, 2003.

Went to the Madstone Theater (home of The San Diego Asian Film Festival) tonight to see a film called Small Voices (Mga Munting Tinig). It's a small budget indie Filipino film that is doing quite well here in the US.

Small Voices

Only the rich can afford to dream. We can't. Thus speaks a child in an impoverished rural area that freshly-minted teacher Melinda Santiago (Alessandra de Rossi) has chosen to begin her dreamed-of profession. The previous teacher she is replacing has left, disillusioned, and taking the opportunity of making it outside the country.

This young woman manages to overcome the odds and is able to give hope to her young charges. Well, sounds like a PI Disney Flick so far, right? There are those elements, but this movie really does have a heartfelt sincerity. De Rossi gives a convincing performance of someone who has the moral fiber and strength to fight the system - and win, through determination and her strongly held beliefs.

And it is an uphill battle. Hope for change is in very short supply. The other teachers and parents don't believe a better future is possible, and look to exploit today's gains (like having children work) instead of taking a longer term view. One family only has one school uniform for two children. It is only slowly that Melinda begins to open their hearts - and hopes - that they can succeed, even through proverty.

Though not without its faults, this a film that will leave you feeling hopeful yourself - that one person can make a difference.

It is playing in the US, mostly in Southern California. Tagalog, with English subtitles.

Warner has just bought US rights to Small Voices!

Opens Friday October 10th

Los Angeles:

lol! (or should I say XD?) Well, I figured out what it meant, more or less, but do you believe there is an offical site for this?? XD

XD ('ex-dee'): A form of smiley in which is "crossed-eyed" and open-mouthed. It's to signify slight laughter (instead of saying 'lol' ever five seconds), a silly gesture, or just something out of the blue. Many roots are "XP" "X]" "X[" and etcetera. XD is the core of all these sources, and it's a substitute to the boring old "".

Fire in SD!

Posted by MikeyMike at 09:18 AM on October 26, 2003.

Woke up from my extra hour of sleep today (DST) and it looked like sunrise and smelled like everyone was using their fireplaces. Go outside and there is ash in the pool! Turn on TV and there are massive fires going on!! Sweet Vocalist: be glad you did not come here this weekend! I have to go to work soon, but I will keep you all informed. I am in no danger. It's miles away... But it's a bad one!!

Just in: Barona Casino is keeping everyone inside! Something about the fire alarms going off at 3am there...

At 10:00pm - Just got home. This series of fires will certainly go down in SD history as one of the worst ever. The mayor has asked that everyone possible be given tomorrow off, because so many are displaced and services so disrupted. The fires are ZERO percent contained, which means it ain't nearly over yet. Of course *I* have to go to work tomorrow...

One of the major (non-Scripps) hospitals here may have to be evacuated tonight, which would be a huge additional burden for the Scripps Hospital system, not to mention the heavier than normal load we have had already because of the fires.

We had people calling in all day, saying that they had to be evacuated. We managed to get a local news video stream going at work. (We are having network problems too today!) People out in the "country" tend to have a lot of animals, including horses. And Californians love their animals like you wouldn't believe! Many risked themselves to save pets today.

Makes you think... If I had 15 minutes, what would I take with me? There have been 12 killed so far. It's like The Perfect Storm, except with wildfires... The Santa Ana winds and one small mistake. If there is a good part to all this, it's seeing people come together - often risking their lives to help others or just lending a helping hand...

You Are My Kind

Posted by MikeyMike at 05:25 AM on October 27, 2003.

My man Seal is back!

You Are My Kind
Santana featuring Seal/Shaman

Stay with me baby
And that's all I ask of you
And I know that someday
You won't remember
The way that this moment feels to you
Don't let it go
Don't turn your back on what you think you know
You never know you know
Don't leave it alone
Cause I need you to cling to

Chorus:
Cause you are my kind
You're all that I want
Here in this life
Until we are gone
Our breath and our skin
Our hearts and our minds
They're one and the same
You are my kind

Well call on me baby
If you should ever need someone
To help get your head straight
I'll be your resident all night
Sure am glad just having you around
Well all that I know
When you find love you never let it go
You never know you know
Without you I'm lost
I get scattered
I'm shattered

Chorus:
Cause you are my kind
You're all that I want
Here in this life

Until we are gone
Our breath and our skin
Our hearts and our minds
They're one and the same
Cause you are my kind
We're one and the same
You are my kind

Don't let it go
Don't turn your back on what you think you know
You never know you know
Don't leave it alone
Cause I need you to cling to

Chorus:
Cause you are my kind
You're all that I want
Here in this life
Until we are gone
Our breath and our skin
Our hearts and our minds
They're one and the same
Cause you are my kind

Bridge
I love and our life
My heart and my soul
Need you tognight
Your love makes me whole
And it's all I can stand
Until you come home
I need you tonight
Cause you are my kind
I need you tonight
Cause you are my kind

Oh, oh, oh ,oh you are my kind
Oh, oh, oh ,oh you are my kind

Fire Update

Posted by MikeyMike at 06:53 PM on October 27, 2003.

It's not over... driving in today, you could see sunspots on the sun - the smoke obscured it that much! Most people that could stayed home from work today...

If I needed any indication as to how bad things are... My Marie Callender's was CLOSED early last night!

You can see the Mexican border line, right where the KNSD 7/39 logo is... And you can make out San Diego bay... It looks purplish in the photo.

Giant Solar Flare

Posted by MikeyMike at 04:51 PM on October 28, 2003.

Jeez! Just what we need tomorrow!

Oct. 28 — The sun on Tuesday unleashed what appears to be the third most powerful flare in recorded history, a storm of charged particles that could hit Earth midday Wednesday with more effect than any since 1989, when power was knocked out to an entire Canadian province.

Thoughts

Posted by MikeyMike at 05:08 AM on October 29, 2003.

I hope NO ONE is looking at the sun because of me!!! It is very dangerous to do that! The safe way is with welder's glass. It is so dark, you almost can't see anything, unless it is as bright as the sun. Please don't take any chances. People have damaged their sight and worse this way. Thanx Dark for mentioning this...

How to safely view the sun

I know someone from Holland and I was thinking that I mostly know place names around there from my knowledge of World Wars I & II...

Not the best way to be familiar with them perhaps. But if you have any interest, the best place to learn about the causes and beginnings of WWI is certainly The Guns of August by Barbara W. Tuchman. She was a writer without professional historical training, but wrote this engrossing book that won a Pulitzer Prize.

I know you are thinking that this sounds mega-boring! But this book reads like good fiction. Think of it... It was the dawn of a bright new century, where all things where possible through "progress". 75 years of peace in Europe. Many thought the cross-ties of business, political and cultural interests made major war inconceivable. But underneath it all, the sabers of war where rattling...

Her book covers the first 90 days of the war, which set the stage for the years of horror to come. Both sides initially thought that it "would be over before Christmas".... More than likely, you have ancestors who fought or were involved in this first "World" war. Over 30,000,000 people died, many in the prime of their trusting youth. None retained their innocence after the guns where finally silenced. In many ways, the events of WWI determined the course of the entire twentieth century and still echo today. Many of today's conflicts have their origins from that time.

Tuchman has many other books that are good reads also. Specifically, I am thinking of A Distant Mirror. It’s about the tumultuous 14th century Europe. A time with many parallels to the twentieth century. This book is anything but dry facts! It is the very beginning of what we would recognize as the modern (western) world. Michael Crichton’s book Timeline, which is soon to be a major movie, is in part based on this fascinating period.

One thought can lead you a long way, it seems! :clown

Sun Destroys Earth!

Posted by MikeyMike at 04:37 PM on October 29, 2003.

well, not quite... we were lucky this time, it seems...

The storm shut down and possibly crippled an experimental communications satellite owned by the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), officials said.

The satellite, called Kodama, went into a protective safe mode this morning. It is still able to communicate but officials left open the possibility that the craft is permanently damaged
- Is this like Turtle mode??

2nd Sun Blast on Friday

Starting to sound like the boy who cried wolf too many times, but:

Target Earth: Second Major Space Storm May Join First Blast

EEEK! I want to be wrong about earthly damage, believe me! The FAA has, for the first time, warned of increased radiation levels on airline flights above 25,000 feet during this time, and some trans-Atlantic flights where deverted due to poor communications...

On the brighter side, auroras have been widely reported, many spectacular, as far south as Texas. The pictures are from an earlier display...(pics from space.com)

Dracula

Watching the History Channel show about Vlad "Dracula”’s family tree, It discusses the whole story behind Vlad The Impaler and Bram Stoker's book Dracula. The book, by the way, is available as a free ebook at Memoware: Download Palm format Dracula It is primarily for Palm Pilots, but there is reader software for PCs too... or you could just go get a cheap copy somewhere. The book is significantly different that the movie versions you've seen. Welps, gotta' get the Halloween candy ready for the kiddies
