Dracula

Posted by MikeyMike at 09:51 PM on October 30, 2003.

Watching the History Channel show about Vlad "Dracula”’s family tree, It discusses the whole story behind Vlad The Impaler and Bram Stoker's book Dracula. The book, by the way, is available as a free ebook at Memoware: Download Palm format Dracula It is primarily for Palm Pilots, but there is reader software for PCs too... or you could just go get a cheap copy somewhere. The book is significantly different that the movie versions you've seen. Welps, gotta' get the Halloween candy ready for the kiddies

The new version was certainly sexier! :) I was surprized it did so poorly at the box office. But they are almost completely different in their feeling I think. As different as the orignal H.G.Wells War of The Worlds from the 1953 version. I think that Victorian writing can be a bit verbose and sometimes a little tedious to modern ears, lol I heard that that rural Romainians still believe in the Undead! I guess Stoker didn't have History Channel to watch back then... In his time Transylvania was a far away as Mars ;)
Do you have a Palm Pilot, BTW?

One of the few Victorian (well, more Edwardian) writers that reads well to modern readers is E.M. Forester, especially Room With A View. The movie and the book I love. Julian Sands, Helena Bonham-Carter and all the reset are wonderfully cast and the cinematograpy is perfect.

Oh! I just thought of Lady Jane, with HB-C and Patrick Stewart (before Star Trek) and a very young Cary Elwes - before The Princess Bride! lol She only ruled England for nine days and was beheaded for her troubles(!) Another wonderful, little known film.. my speciality, it seems :)

I seem to pick up accents - at least in my head. In 11th grade AP History, I got so into Revolutionary War times, I was writing in that style... even in letters to friends! So, I guess I like the quaint rythyms of older English... I'm blathering on, aren't I? :O
The modern Palm Pilots are very darn handy. My Sony T665C has hi-res color and supports mp3, quality picture dispaly and movies. Not to mention all the regular apps, like email, apts., calender, adress list, etc. even web pages with Isilio. And well displayed ebooks. I read The DaVinci Code by Dan Brown this way recently. Great for train rides! ;) Have I bored you into insensibility yet?? lol
