Free New Sarah McLachlan Album

Posted by MikeyMike at 06:05 AM on November 1, 2003.

Sarah has a new album coming out soon called Afterglow, and VH1 is streaming the whole thing until, um... for a while anyway... (I didn't hear the end of the advert). I am listening to it right now. This is her first new album in quite a while. She really helped to upgrade the status of women in the music industry by organizing the Lilith Fair tour... I remember when she was a fairly obscure Canadian making CDs in Vancouver... Yeap, back in the FTE and Into The Fire days...

Vlad <> Prince William?

Posted by MikeyMike at 05:37 PM on November 3, 2003.

from some ad:
Prince William of England descends from the same noble house that spawned Prince Vlad III Dracula of Wallachia (modern Romania). But whereas Prince William has made a killing with his handsome looks and shy smile, Prince Vlad “the Impaler” achieved infamy for his tortuous methods of execution— most notably his penchant for impaling victims on tall wooden spikes.

So, (I can't resist) do you think Prince William has a talent for "impalement" too?!

David Bisbal

Posted by MikeyMike at 06:44 AM on November 6, 2003.

Hey guys, I think you're really missing something if you don't know about David Bisbal. I first saw him on the World Music Awards on the WB a while back. He won some Spanish reality show, (like American Idol) and has taken off from there. Even if you don't speak Spanish, some of his songs are pretty darn hot!
In fact, I have Zhi Wen traveling down to Spain to check him out!! (Just Kidding)
I have his song Vida Loca for you, and you can check out his rather good web site here. And I don't think you ladies will object to the "eye candy" aspect either! XD

Christmas Market Nuremberg

Posted by MikeyMike at 11:05 PM on November 6, 2003.

Just visited Amanda's Tab and she was talking about the lovely Christmas market in her English hometown. It Got me thinking about my time in Germany, and the Christmas Market held for hundreds of years in the medieval town of Nuremberg.

Maybe I can dig up some old pictures from when I was there? (And the less reputable Oktoberfest pics! :O) But for now, here are some photos from the 2002 event. The city has a very nice Web Site for the Christmas Market. I'm starting to get the Christmas spirit!

Posted by MikeyMike at 12:55 PM on November 11, 2003.

DOOH! I forgot the most important part: Harleem Lee is coming to San Diego this Friday! This was never mentioned before today!

Just got back from Tower Records La Jolla. A friend of mine is a huge Asian American Harlemm Lee ( Fame "reality" TV show winner) fan. Today his CD came out. I heard on his Yahoo group that they only had 10 copies available(!) So, I got my ass up at 10am and headed out. There was no one there! I was expecting swarms looking to buy the new CD. lol They let me buy 2 of the 10 copies that they had. It's a pretty good CD and I also found some videos on the net of his to burn. What a nice guy I am! This person works two jobs, so chasing after the CD would be a real burden...

Since I was there anyway... I also got David Bisbal's CD Corazon Latino... Very good CD! It also comes with a DVD. What an excellent idea! See? Listening on the Internet can sell CDs! Sold me.

lyrics from Review My Kisses... a surprisingly different song from Leann Rimes... Zhi Wen knows a good song!

I want to review my kisses
On every inch of your body
I want to reveal my secrets
That only you should know
I feel all this pain inside me
That only your lips can make
better
I want to review my kisses
So you won't forget that you

Meteor Shower Tonight

Posted by MikeyMike at 05:14 PM on November 18, 2003.

Our problem in SOCAL is the overcast we almost always get at night (not to mention the light pollution!) Maybe we'll be lucky tonight!?

"The Leonid meteor shower will peak late tonight into early Wednesday, hurling bits of ancient comet debris into Earth's atmosphere. While it will not match grand displays of recent years, the 2003 version is expected to provide a good number of shooting stars and a handful of spectacularly bright fireballs."

Here are the details from Space.com

Later note: Just saw one bright fireball on the way home tonight, about 1:45am (9:45am GMT)

Harlemm Lee in San Diego this Friday!

Posted by MikeyMike at 01:23 PM on November 20, 2003.

Update: Just saw Harlemm on KUSI! He was on 4 segments, 3 shorties (bumpers?) and the main segment at 8:45. The hosts loved him, and he sang and spoke very well. See ya' tonight at Borders!

For everyone that might want to see Harleem Lee (Winner of the Fame contest on NBC this summer) live in San Diego this Friday (11/21): (Listen to him Here!)

He has a live performance on KUSI Morning News (Ch. 9) from 7 am - 9 am. (not sure of the exact time slot)

Harleem wil be performing and greeting his fans at Borders Gaslamp in Downtown San Diego at 8 pm. (668 6th Ave., 619-702-4200)

You can share the excitement at his Yahoo fan group

Harlemm at Borders San Diego!

Posted by MikeyMike at 01:34 AM on November 22, 2003.

I just got back from Harlemm Lee's performance at Borders in downtown San Diego tonight. He is one great performer! There was an amazing turnout, given that there was almost no real promotion. One group came down from San Francisco - it was their vacation!

I must admit that I wasn't too enthusiastic when a friend was all ga-ga about him. I hadn't even seen the show this summer. Well, the more I found out about him, the more impressed I became. His music might not be your cup of tea, but it's hard not admire his tenacity and ability to make a song his own.

As you probably know, Asian performers in this country can't catch a break. He's been in LA for 17 years, never quite fitting the demographic... Just like Coco Lee's US album went nowhere quick without the promotion other artists might expect.

He is truly gifted and I hope that Harlemm has a long and rewarding career! Did I mention he's a great guy too?

This Just In...

Posted by MikeyMike at 03:52 PM on November 25, 2003.

Twas the night of Thanksgiving, but I just couldn't sleep.
I tried counting backwards; I tried counting sheep.
The leftovers beckoned - the dark meat and white,
But I fought the temptation with all of my might.

Tossing and turning with anticipation,
The thought of a snack became infatuation.
So I raced to the kitchen, flung open the door
And gazed at the fridge, full of goodies galore.

I gobbled up turkey and buttered potatoes,
Pickles and carrots, beans and tomatoes.
I felt myself swelling so plump and so round,
'Til all of a sudden, I rose off the ground.

I crashed through the ceiling, floating into the sky
With a mouthful of pudding and a handful of pie.
But I managed to yell as I soared past the trees...
Happy eating to all; pass the cranberries, please.

May your stuffing be tasty; may your turkey be plump.
May your potatoes 'n gravy have nary a lump.
May your yams be delicious; may your pies take the prize.
May your Thanksgiving dinner stay off of your thighs.

HAVE A WONDERFUL THANKSGIVING!

Sweetest Goodbye

Posted by MikeyMike at 01:58 PM on November 26, 2003.

This, gentle readers, is from the group Maroon 5's album Songs about Jane:

Listen to it here

Where you are seems to be
As far as an eternity
Outstretched arms, open hearts
And if it never ends then when do we start?
I'll never leave you behind
Or treat you unkind
I know you understand
And with a tear in my eye
Give me the sweetest goodbye
That I ever did receive

Pushing forward and arching back
Bring me closer to heart attack
Say goodbye and just fly away
When you come back
I have some things to say

How does it feel to know you never have to be alone
When you get home
There must be someplace here that only you and I could go
So I can show you how I...

Dream away everyday
Try so hard to disregard
The rhythm of the rain that drops
And coincides with the beating of my heart

Music of the Moment

Posted by MikeyMike at 02:45 AM on November 27, 2003.

I am really pleased that some of you like the songs I've put up recently. I love music so much... and it's a shame not to be able to share the special music you've found with people that apprieciate it!

Everyone has their own taste, and I respect that. I love finding music that most people would never get to hear otherwise. (The same with film.) In the US, it's hard to hear anything that some mega-corporation isn't pushing! It's very rewarding to hear what the rest of the world is doing too! XD

I should say that many of the songs I love where introduced to me by the very astute JenJen. She's lived in Indonesia, Europe and New York City. We share many of the same tastes, but additionally she is a fan of electronica and dance music too. Thanks Jen!

Update: Please let me know what songs you DL, so I can replace them with new stuff. Tabulas Friends with low bandwidth Internet connections: I will send you a CD-R if you want.

My God! The Black Eyed Peas' Where Is The Love? is a great song, both on an emotional level and has such profound words for us, without being maudlin...

Whatever happened to the values of humanity
Whatever happened to the fairness in equality
Instead of spreading love, we're spreading animosity
Lack of understanding, leading lives away from unity
That's the reason why sometimes I'm feelin' under
That's the reason why sometimes I'm feelin' down
There's no wonder why sometimes I'm feelin' under
Gotta' keep my faith alive till love is found

Oh, and what do we think of Love Actually?? Was it Aggie that described Pride and Prejudice as "6+ hours of Colin Firth"? lol
Soundtrack looks good!

Girl With A Pearl Earring Movie

Posted by MikeyMike at 02:19 PM on November 29, 2003.

Thanks to Zhi Wen for reminding me of this!

Who of my gentle readers didn't love Girl With A Pearl Earring by Tracy Chevalier?

I didn't know Scarlett Johansson when I first heard a film version was being made. But since then, I was amazed at her performance in Lost In Translation with Bill Murray! (aptly described as "A valentine to the city of Tokyo" - but I digress...) And we all know Colin Firth, right ladies? Well, besides eye candy, he's a very serious actor. So, I was delighted at seeing these two paired for the lead roles. Tom Wilkinson is usually excellent too. Good so far...

When in doubt - check it out! One of my fav sites for quickly assessing a movie is Rotten Tomatoes dot com. Funny name, but they have ratings by all the major film reviewers out there. Plus links, etc. With all the diverse viewpoints, you can make up your own mind.

Perhaps I should call an intermission and let you check out the site for the movie? - I'll be here, waiting patiently

Ah, you're back.

Don't you get the feeling that this is a film made with care and respect for the subject matter? It certainly seems so to me! Wide release is in January, 2004. But there are limited engagements before that. San Diego (hehehe) is often a test bed for new films, so maybe there will be a sneak preview here? I am on several lists (pays to go to those film festivals!) so ya' never know!

Girl with a Pearl Earring by Johannes Vermeer now hangs in the Mauritshuis Museum, in The Hague, Holland. Anyone seen it for real??
