Soon Love Soon

Posted by MikeyMike at 10:17 AM on January 1, 2004.

Something for a New Year... Listen Here

Soon love soon...
there'll be a fire burning in the temple of our peace
there'll be a soaring voice for our silent pleas
we will hold our broken circle and begin to pray
we will find a black and white in the gray

and we will be as one god
and we will be as one people

we will find illumination in unnatural light
you will travel a thousand miles without leaving my sight
we will find we never knew hatred ran so deep
such a wide, wide chasm of faith to leap

but we will be as one god
and we will be as one people

there will be an evolution of the human soul
we will know that be a part is to be truly whole
we will know the pattern of centuries rise and fall
we will know that the fate of one is the fate of all

and we will be as one god
and we will be as one people

Posted by MikeyMike at 06:08 PM on January 15, 2004.

Missing the guilty pleasure of Spice Girls kinda' tunes? Then perhaps you'll enjoy this UK gurl group called Atomic Kitten..

I saw them mentioned on someone's Song of The Moment... but I kept getting those fake songs! You know, with just the first 20 seconds or so over and over again... Had time to do a little detective work today and got the real song... If You Come To Me Catchy tune!

I also like their song called Always be My Baby. Yes, I will burn in Pop hell!

I am updating my Contents area now. So you faithful people can have something new... finally!

Everybody Got Their Something

Posted by MikeyMike at 08:04 PM on January 15, 2004.

I've DL'ed so much stuff in the last month... Sometimes you just forget, especially with the busy holiday season. Like this song - Nikka Costas's Everybody Got Their Something.

I first heard about Nikka and this song when I went to Harlemm Lee's performance at Borders in San Diego last November. He mentioned that this was going to be the first song he performed on Fame and at the last minute, they told him they couldn't get clearance - after two weeks of rehearsals!

What really impressed me was that Harlemm went on to explain that the lyrics cystalized his feelings about what the show and performing meant to him. That even if he was "short, blading and old" (36) that he still had something unique to offer - as does everyone...

I'’ll take my chances
With what I believe is only mine
Busy holding on
So the roof don't fly
Keep you from moving on
So get it right
Turn the tide over
Like a love song
Like a butterfly
Believe if you hand it over
You'll come out all right

Everybody got their something
Make you smile like an itty bitty child

Girl With A Pearl Opening Wide

Posted by MikeyMike at 08:04 AM on January 23, 2004.

hehe! It's here... Girl With A Pearl Earring is opening just about everywhere (US) this weekend.

Pretty good reviews from the peeps that have seen it so far... Nice for there to be a movie out that I badly want to see! Hope to see it tonight or Saturday...

I can pretty much assure my readers that you will enjoy the book too...

PS - Happy birthday to the lovely Michelle (Mitch) De Lota this Sunday! Ready for your Quarter Life Crisis??

That's another good thing about a PDA... harder to forget birthdays when they puzz in your pants! (Vibrate mode on PDA calendar)

There is freedom within, there is freedom without
Try to catch the deluge in a paper cup
There's a battle ahead, many battles are lost
But you'll never see the end of the road
While you're travelling with me

Hey now, hey now
Don't dream it's over
Hey now, hey now
When the world comes in
They come, they come
To build a wall between us
We know they won't win

Je Vis Pour Elle

Posted by MikeyMike at 11:45 AM on January 23, 2004.

Damn! Just searching for music and I found this!

You might not know that I am a big Andrea Bocelli fan. I've always loved Vivo Per Lei (I Live For Her). It's one the songs from his great Romanza CD. I think this CD is the one of his to get, if your only having one, as they say... You may have seen his music while prowling for alluring panties at Victoria's Secret... They had a special CD of his last Valentines Day...

JenJen got to see him live in concert! In Lisbon, I believe...

Vivo Per Lei was originally sung with the Italian pop star Giorgia. Come to find out there have been several versions of this song - with the women singing in different languages. Here is a nice little web site documenting this. Imagine my surprise to find out the French version is with Helene Segara - another favorite of mine!

This is going straight to the Contents Area! Give it a listen...

Here are the lyrics in Italian/French - so you can sing along! The web site above has the English/German/Italian/Spanish/Portugues lyrics(!):

JE VIS POUR ELLE
V. Zelli / M. Mengali / G. Panceri
French Lyrics: M. Jourdan

Vivo per lei da quando sai
la prima volta l'ho incontrata,
non mi ricordo come ma
mi è entrata dentro e c'è restata.
Vivo per lei perché mi fa
vibrare forte l'anima,
vivo per lei e non è un peso.

Je vis pour ell’depuis toujours
qu’ell’ me déchire ou qu’ell’ soit tendre

Vivo per lei lo so mi fa
girare in città in città

Sputnik Sweetheart

Posted by MikeyMike at 09:56 PM on January 23, 2004.

Here's a passage for ya'....

“I haven’t slept with my husband for almost a year,” she revealed to me as she lay in my arms. “You’re the only one”.

But I couldn’t love her. For whatever reason, that unconditional, natural intimacy Sumire and I had just wasn’t there. A thin, transparent veil always came between us. Visible or not, a barrier remained. Awkward silences came on us all the time – particularly when we said goodbye. That never happened with me and Sumire. Being with this woman confirmed one undeniable fact: I needed Sumire more than ever.

After the woman left, I went for a walk alone, wandered aimlessly for a while, then dropped by a bar near the station and had a Canadian Club on the rocks. As always at times like those, I felt like the most wretched person alive. I quickly drained my first drink and ordered another.

Closed my eyes and thought of Sumire. Sumire topless, sunbathing on the white sands of a Greek island. At the table next to me four college boys and girls were drinking beer, laughing it up and having a good time. An old number by Huey Lewis and the News was playing. I could smell pizza baking.

When did my youth slip away from me? I suddenly thought. It was over, wasn’t it? Seemed like just yesterday I was still only half grown up. Huey Lewis and the News had a couple of hit songs then. Not so many years ago. And now here I was, inside a closed circuit, spinning my wheels. Knowing I wasn’t getting anywhere but spinning just the same. I had to. Had to keep that up or I wouldn’t be able to survive.

That night I got a phone call from Greece. At 2:00 a.m.

But it wasn’t from Sumire. It was from Miu.

LEXX

Posted by MikeyMike at 05:22 AM on January 24, 2004.

Well Fellow Travelers, anyone else out there watching that whacked-out, sexually-confused cross between Frank Herbert's Dune, early Tim Burton and Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Universe TV show on SCI-FI called LEXX? No, I didn't think so...

The only reason I happened on LEXX was that the The History Channel pimps themselves at 4am for two hours of Infomercials (and not even good infomercials!) every night. So, I am often casting-about for the least obnoxious progy on in that time period - if I can't be reading a good book - or perchance even to dream.... You wouldn't believe how many awful B-Westerns (Remember whip wielding Western hero Lash La Rue?!?) and even an occasionally good movie I've watched in that time frame!

Where to start?? This show is a rip-off of just about every SCI-FI stereotype out there. Not necessarily a bad thing! XD The LEXX is this giant spaceship that looks like a giant dragonfly. If fact, most of the technology (as in Dune) seems organic. It has a staring cast of a ninny Captain, "already dead" assassin, buxom blond with something going on, and a rouges gallery of well - rouges!

It helps if you know this is a joint German/Canadian production. How does it help? Not sure, but it does, at least for me... Something about the look and orientation tells you it's not American fare. Somewhat refreshing, actually. Watch a couple of shows to get oriented. Kinda' grows on you...

Here's another good link. Have fun Seekers!

Bird Flu

Posted by MikeyMike at 08:32 AM on January 24, 2004.

Is this going to be the next SARS? Mentioned by Jennifer. Articles (and links to more info) from the Straits Times site. Below is some of the article:

Bird flu: An animal disease that may spread among humans
Q. What is bird flu?

FIGHTING FLU: The Thai authorities are sparing no effort to curb an outbreak of bird flu - they are culling chickens and disinfecting farms hit by the virus. Yesterday, workers in Supanburi province went about the gruesome task of killing thousands of chickens. Two Thai boys now have the disease. -- REUTERS
A. This poultry disease is an animal type of influenza - the H7N7 'classical' strain of avian influenza.

Avian influenza can range from a mild disease that has only minor effects to a highly infectious version that is fatal.

It spreads in the air and in manure. It can also be transmitted by contaminated feed, water, equipment and clothing.

Clinically normal waterfowl and sea birds may introduce the virus into flocks. Broken contaminated eggs may infect chicks in the incubator.

The disease, first identified in Italy more than 100 years ago, occurs worldwide.

The World Organisation for Animal Health says the incubation period for the disease in poultry is three to five days.

It has various effects on birds, ranging from severe depression to drastic declines in egg production and sudden death. There is no treatment.

Q. Is bird flu harmful to humans?

A. Human fatalities from avian influenza were unknown before 1997, when six people in Hong Kong died after being infected with the H5N1 strain. Last year, it infected a father and son in the crowded city.

Last April, a Dutch veterinarian who had been working on a farm infected with bird flu became ill with an H7 strain of the disease and died of pneumonia.

The vet did not take medication against avian and human flu. Rules have been tightened to ensure anyone who comes in contact with infected farms does so.

Other Dutch farm workers have come down with eye infections caused by the virus and a few have also had influenza symptoms, but these have all been treated successfully with medication.

South Korea, which has already culled nearly two million chickens and ducks, reported last week the first new case of avian flu in more than a week, dashing hopes that the outbreak was subsiding.

Japan reported its first bird flu outbreak in years last week. Five people have died of the disease in Vietnam.

Q. Could bird flu become a human epidemic?

A. Although avian flu is very infectious in birds, it does not spread easily among humans.

There is a danger, however, that avian virus mixes with human influenza and form a new disease. The new virus could share genetic material from both viruses, being highly infectious like human flu and dangerously fatal like the avian variety.

Dr Shigeru Omi of the World Health Organisation has said the consequences would be dire if the virus latched on to the human influenza virus and spread among people, who have little immune protection against the strain.

Saw Girl With a Pearl Earring

Posted by MikeyMike at 12:45 AM on January 25, 2004.

Got out to see Girl With A Pearl Earring tonight. I was a little late as you can see below... But I just missed the previews.

There is so much right with this movie that you will surely want to see it - especially if you loved the book.

The time period seems very well captured. Delft is beautifully shown as the bustling mercantile city is was then. The kind of place whose riches supported a small group of artists - precariously. It was dark and often dirty, at least by our standards, ("Get the wash water from the canal - it's clean enough" The same canal they throw their waste in!) and people's places where very proscribed.

Scarlett Johannsen pulls off Griet’s character very well. I think I know every pore and could pick out her eyes out of thousands after this because of all the extreme close-ups. Most of the other characters are well chosen too. I especially enjoyed the character of the other maid. She had something of the humor of the Nurse in Romeo and Juliet. The cinematography is to die for! Vermeer would be pleased.

My problem is that Griet and Vermeer seemed like the cat eternally had their tongues... Yes, reticence, yes the knowing look. But they took it a bit too far, I thought. In the book, there was time to show why this should be - their internal world - but in the movie it just seems perverse.

But these are minor quibbles. The audience was quiet and attentive throughout the film. Like me, they obviously came to see this film, not by random chance. I heard a good buzz as we left that world into the rainy night…

NEW ARTIST OF THE YEAR

I'd also like to tack Vienna Teng and Jason Mraz onto the list of newbies that I can't stop gushing about, even though they technically debuted last year, since they likely found a good chunk of their respective audiences in 2003.

Oscar Noms Mikey Likes

Posted by MikeyMike at 03:46 PM on January 31, 2004.

I never thought the Oscars where that important, because it's mostly picked by a bunch of old codgers. They do have a tremendous impact on a films success - especially for "smaller" films. But some of the nominees this year are interesting! Mikey's picks:

Best Picture:
Best Director:
Best Actor:
Best Original Screen Play:

Lost In Translation

I've been raving about this movie since I saw it this fall. Bill Murray (Best Actor nominee) and Scarlett Johansson give stellar performances and Sophia Coppola should get a Best Director for this one. Really has to be a great one to overcome the "Art House" tag and be seen... One of the few of 2003 I'm buying on DVD for the permanent collection...

Best Actress:

Keisha Castle-Hughes for Whaler Rider

This is an amazing nomination! Imagine a Maori girl plucked out of her New Zealand elementary school class and going on to win Best Actress!? Not since Anna Paquin (also from New Zealand) in Jane Campion's The Piano has there been such a luminous young presence on the screen. The story is pretty compelling, especially the wonderful ending sequence, but Keisha is the heart and soul of this film. She'll draw you in - Another DVD for Mikey's 2003 collection! XD

Best Supporting Actor:

Ken Watanabe for The Last Samurai

I was prepared not to like Last Samurai much. I've been disenchanted with Tom Cruise for quite a while (specifically since Days of Thunder). So, he had a lot to prove to me, especially since he is on the screen for a remarkably large amount of time.

I was agreeably surprised to see that he obviously worked a lot harder on this film than a major star has to. And that includes finding and supporting a first rate cast. Ken Watanabe is the most remarkable of these. He represents the traditional Samurai value system. Brutal, beautiful and honor bound. He puts a human face on a doomed way of life and makes the film better than it might have been with a stereotypical figure in his place... Samurai is also up for Best Costume Design, Best Art Direction and Best Sound.

Best Cinematography:

Eduardo Serra, for Girl With a Pearl Earring

You've heard plenty from Mikey about this one... Hard to believe Girl won't win in this category! Practically every frame is a work of art, capturing Vermeer's world and ethos.
Also up for Best Costume Design and Best Art Direction.

Well, there you have it. Mikey's take on the mostly Dark Horse nominees I've loved in 2003...
