New Toy
Posted by MikeyMike at 11:05 PM on February 29, 2004.
Well folks, I finally broke down and got a USB 2.0 120gb hard drive.

My PC is fine (20gb) for regular stuff, but videos and even the occasional movie o^O demand more online space! Not to mention a few gigabytes of mp3s... Yes, I have been moving it off to CD/R, but I have been collecting stuff (Alll hail the T-1 line!) faster than I can archive it. Need to buy a DVD burner I guess, but this was faster and more convienient.
It's a totally self-contained unit. Plug in the power, connect the USB (2.0 or 1.1) and go! It's already formatted as FAT-32, so it will work with anything from Windows98 up. I just created some directories and started copying.... My C: drive now has 45% free. From the usual 3-8%

I can even defragment it now... The price? $179, plus it has a mail in $30 rebate! I've absolutely crammed it with my old stuff and still have a 100gb free!
Now you guys have to suggest more good stuff to help me fill it up!

Bisbalmania!
Posted by MikeyMike at 02:31 AM on March 5, 2004.
I found the video for David Bisbal's new song
Buleria (finally)!
The video quality isn't the best, but any better wouldn't have fit in 8mb, now would it?

The video scenario has a Romeo and Juliet plot to it, two lovers who can't be together and the tragic outcome..
Seems to be #1 on the Spanish charts at the moment, and pretty high all over Latin America and in Europe...
As I take it,
Buleria is a form of Flamenco, popular is the south of Spain - and a very spicy form indeed! As Gema said, it brings out your Spanish soul!

Terror Blasts Kill at Least 192 in Spain
Posted by MikeyMike at 12:00 AM on March 12, 2004.
This is horrible! My heart goes out to the people of Spain...
MADRID, Spain - A series of bombs hidden in backpacks exploded in quick succession Thursday, blowing apart four commuter trains and killing at least 192 people and wounding more than 1,400. Spain at first blamed Basque separatists but a shadowy group claimed responsibility in the name of al-Qaida for the worst terrorist attack in Spanish history.

Thanks!
Posted by MikeyMike at 02:35 AM on March 14, 2004.
Thanks to everyone who expressed their sympathy about the terrorist attack in Madrid. I'm sure
Gema does too... I heard from her, and she's alright. But of course is still grieving...
Today I went to the desert, and there where two US Border Patrol checkpoints active today - most unusual. I went for the short-lived blooming of the desert flowers. Perhaps they are representative of the beauty and tenacity of life in a sometimes harsh world?

Caught In A Moment
Posted by MikeyMike at 04:31 AM on March 16, 2004.
I updated the time on this one... I'm afraid it might have gotten lost in all the pictures!
Here's another Sugababes tune I like (and finally found a non-altered version of) called
Caught In A Moment... Love those luscious gurl harmonies... Yummy stuff!
We're caught in a moment and I won't let it go
I am falling deeper, losing my control
Involved in a feeling
Like the blink of an eye
And the silence, it belongs to you and I

Desert Journey
Posted by MikeyMike at 05:17 AM on March 16, 2004.
Here are some more pictures from my trip to the
Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, east of San Diego, California. (Anza was a Spanish explorer who opened the overland route to "Alta" California from Mexico and Borregos are the wild sheep still found here.) Good place to find yourself again.
The vast spaces give you a perspective you can't get anywhere else. There is more life here than meets the eye. You only have to look for it, become aware.
Engulfed in utter darkness, the scent of wild lavender delights as I journey down the highway, thinking of nothing, finding peace...

Happy St. Patrick's Day!
Posted by MikeyMike at 06:33 PM on March 17, 2004.
Happy
St. Patrick's Day!
Funny how this holiday, in the US anyway, has been co-opted to be a general party for one and all. Like Cinco de Mayo (5th of May) out here in the Western US has transformed a somewhat obscure Mexican holdiday (no, it isn't Mexican Independence Day) into a massive party!

Anyway, it's fun to "wear the green". As kids, if we didn't wear something green - you got pinched - all day long!! lol
I hear that the big party and celebration of St. Paddy's Day like in America is even held in Dublin now. Sort of like American pizza in Italy...
This is a very interesting and delightful book to read, on this most Irish of days...
How The Irish Saved Civilization
from Amazon:
In this delightful and illuminating look into a crucial but little-known "hinge" of history, Thomas Cahill takes us to the "island of saints and scholars," the Ireland of St. Patrick and the Book of Kells. Here, far from the barbarian despoliation of the continent, monks and scribes laboriously, lovingly, even playfully preserved the West's written treasury. When stability returned in Europe, these Irish scholars were instrumental in spreading learning, becoming not only the conservators of civilization, but also the shapers of the medieval mind, putting their unique stamp on Western culture.
Oooh Danny boy....

Walking through the parking lot tonight, I saw this car that was totally Pucca-ed out! lol
The owner must work in the shopping center, because the car was still there when I came back out after dinner. I was tempted to wait to see who owned this auto, but thought better of it... I wouldn't even know what a "pucca" was if it wasn't for you guys! Ever seen this much gear in one car?

Vienna Teng, Live at NPR
Posted by MikeyMike at 12:59 AM on March 22, 2004.
Vienna Teng recently released her second album and was interviewed on NPR's (National Public Radio)
Weekend Edition...
March 7, 2004 -- Vienna Teng's first CD, Waking Hour, was recorded while she was still at Stanford, and back in 2002 it forced the young singer/songwriter to make a career decision. She left her job as a computer engineer and hit the road as a performer.
She's had no reason to look back. Her second CD, Warm Strangers, builds on some of the strengths of the first, and she's not afraid of the music industry's sophomore jinx. more...

See *Two* Comets Soon!
Posted by MikeyMike at 03:17 AM on March 22, 2004.
Yes, sports fans, you can see
two comets (people use to
fear them) in the coming month or so... Plus, you lucky ducks can see 5 planets at one time... a most rare occurance!
Now, I don't want any of you guys getting into your "The Aliens behind the comet are coming to take us away to Glory" black unitogs and tennies and drinking the "koolade"! o^O
This from
Space.com:
Comet LINEAR:
Unfortunately, for those in the Northern Hemisphere, comet LINEAR will be quite difficult to see, since it will hover very low near the eastern horizon about an hour before sunrise right on through the balance of April and on into the beginning of May.
Northern observers might catch only a fleeting glimpse of LINEAR, possibly as bright as second or even first magnitude, in the brightening dawn twilight at the end of April or very beginning of May. Objects this bright can be visible almost until the Sun actually rises. Thereafter, the comet will no longer be able to be seen, moving too far to the south to be visible from northern latitudes.
Comet NEAT:
The comet will be passing closest to the Earth on the following evening, just under 30 million miles (48 million kilometers) away. In the nights that follow, Comet NEAT -- perhaps as bright as first or second magnitude – will be getting progressively higher up in the southwest sky and correspondingly, easier to see.
On May 13, a line drawn from Castor to Pollux (in Gemini) and extended out three times the distance between these two stars will bring you to Comet NEAT.
On May 15, the comet will reach its closest point to the Sun, just over 89 million miles (142 million kilometers) away. It should then fade rapidly from view as it moves away from both Sun and Earth, moving into Ursa Major by month’s end.
See them other worlds!

Internet Worms!
Posted by MikeyMike at 05:01 AM on March 24, 2004.
I hate to get all techy on ya', but there are a lot of email worms out there right now! Typically, they are email file attachments that do their nasty work when you open the attachment. What really sucks is that these emails may be from people you know! (They often read your email programs address list.
I highly recommend you get a firewall program and an anti-virus program. Without these, it's like driving without a seatbelt... too late when you really need it! Also, if you have MS Windows OSs like Windows98 or XP, do yourself a favor, and click on Start, then Windows Update! MicroSoft has been caught "with their pants down" many times, and doing the updates is the only way to fix known vulnerabilities.
1) Windows Update is
free, of course.
2) An excellent
free Firewall (many others aren't very good) is called
Zone Alarm. I have used it for years, and it is very good. Small learning curve, but pretty straightforward...
3) Easy to recommend
AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition (for personal use)! It even provides email virus blocking, which is a *big* problem right now!
If you don't do the above, or have equivalent programs operating, you are going to get
burned - it's only a matter of time! I know too many people that have had their computers messed-up not to warn you all...
You may now return to checking out baby Emma!
