We Won't Be Fooled Again

Don't be fooled today! Do you have April Fools Day where you are? It is very big here in the US. We jokesters have field day... My brothers birthday is April 2, so we were always aware of the day. (We said he was born a day *late*
)

Here's some info about the Day, culled from the 'net...

The closest point in time that can be identified as the beginning of this tradition was in 1582, in France. Prior to that year, the new year was celebrated for eight days, beginning on March 25. The celebration culminated on April 1. With the reform of the calendar under Charles IX, the Gregorian Calendar was introduced, and New Year's Day was moved to January 1.
However, communications being what they were in the days when news traveled by foot, many people did not receive the news for several years. Others, the more obstinate crowd, refused to accept the new calendar and continued to celebrate the new year on April 1. These backward folk were labeled as "fools" by the general populace. They were subject to some ridicule, and were often sent on "fools errands" or were made the butt of other practical jokes.
This harassment evolved, over time, into a tradition of prank-playing on the first day of April. The tradition eventually spread to England and Scotland in the eighteenth century. It was later introduced to the American colonies of both the English and French. April Fool's Day thus developed into an international fun fest, so to speak, with different nationalities specializing in their own brand of humor at the expense of their friends and families.

Before and After

Gema has a good idea! She put up pictures of herself as a child and recent pictures too...Very bonita! Well, I guess that I should do the same if I'm asking that of you, right?
Amazing what you can find, dusting off the old CD-Rs, huh? I scanned most of these when I first got a film scanner and had saved them off to CD. If you're look for a really cheap way to scan prints, HP makes a small 4x6 inch print size USB scanner called the
HP1000 for like $30. I gave one as a present, and they just loved it!
1) Mike in the Army. I was a Medic in the 1/48th Infantry, 3rd Armored Division, Gelnhausen, Germany. Notice the Expert Field Medical Badge (
EFMB) that Mikey is sporting in this pic. Very tough test of medic skills that less than 10% qualify for... That test, out in the "field" was a nightmare, trying to get through everything!
2) Mike at age 5 on a Pony. Looking back, I bet that pony worked his ass off!
I don't remember the picture being taken, but the damn "Pony Picture" was on the mantle of every relative I ever visited! o^O
3) Mikey at 1 year old. Must have been one funny joke!
4) Kidergarten pic at age 5. I went to Kindergarten in San Diego. But, moving to Virginia that summer, they said I was too young (November baby) to attend first grade that fall!
So, I had to wait another year. Maybe good to be a little older through school??
5) Mike, Mitch and "Jaws"! See, I do know Mitch (
BadBad_Zoot)... lol She was visiting relatives in SOCAL summer of 2000. We and her siblings met up at
Universal Studios Tour. Lot' o' fun was had by all!!

Before and After Part Deux

1) Rick, baby Cheryl, Mike and Mark. I was about 10 at the time. Rick's birthday is today!
2) Mike's National University ID card. After the army, I came back to San Diego. Hella' good time going there. Lots of great people. It was designed for working people (a new concept a the time) So everyone was motivated and the professors actually did for a living what they where teaching! - what a concept, huh?
3) Mike, Mark and Rick. House at Ocean Beach (San Diego) One block from the beach. Couldda' bought that house for about $20,000 at the time. Now, just the land would be at least $500,000! Rick doesn't look too pleased with his hair "do", huh?
4) Mike, cousins and Rick. Visiting San Diego before my last year of High School, we went to Disneyland. This was right before seeing that group that had the hit
Rock The Boat... Can't hear that song without the memories coming back.
5) Mike n' Mom. Must have been about 1 1/2 at the time. Good eater, even then!

Hi all! Glad Tabulas is back up. You sometimes don't appreciate something till it's gone! :O
Kudos to Roy for keeping it as reliable as it has been this last year. Can't wait to see what "Tabulas 2" has in store! If you are wavering, think strongly about getting a paid account. Now is the time. With Roy graduating soon, he’s going to’ have to examine the time/cost benefits of continuing to develop Tabulas. If anyone truly can't afford it, let me know and I'll buy it for you. I don't know of an easier to use journaling system, nor a better group of friends!

Back from Phoenix

Hope everyone had a good holiday! Easter/Spring Break, whatever!
I had a great time in Phoenix, Arizona visiting my Mom and youngest brother and sister and my niece. Mostly just hung out. I got to watch that
Charlie's Angels movie and
Akira. I like Lucy Liu more and more it seems! I saw her in Kill Bill Volume 1 recently too...
We visited the Phoenix Japanese Friendship Garden. It's pretty nice. Especially before it gets to be 100F soon!
There is a Japanese Friendship Garden in San Diego too at Balboa Park. You have to visit Balboa Park when you all visit!

Helicopters over Scripps

Here's some pictures I captured from our parking lot yesterday evening. The Coast Guard helicopters don't shutdown after they land and are much bigger (and louder) than the civilian rescue choppers! They mostly do Sea rescues, and with our bays and Pacific Ocean right next door, there is plenty of work to do...
A lot of famous people come to Scripps La Jolla to get cosmetic surgery. There is a private helopad for them. They mostly come under assumed names!

Bending it like Beckham

Seems David Beckham's been awefully naughty lately! Zhi Wen was talking about how popular "texting" (SMS) was!!
Got to give the Brit tabloids credit for condeming slease wilst expolioting it to the max!
LOVESICK David Beckham couldn't contain his passion as he tapped out red-hot txt messages to his mistresses.
He would send them at all times of day, even admitting that his fingers were working overtime on his phone keypad while he was in a meeting.

I managed to get a couple of pictures tonight at work.
We've been feeding the birds out back for a while now. A couple of ducks have taken to coming for chow call in the evenings. We don't know where they "live", but it's niice to see some wildlife after the wildfires this fall that decimated the local flora and fauna! These are male and female Mallards. A mating pair, I think. Perhaps some baby ducks soon?
The other shot is a Life Flight (Mercy Air) helicopter coming in to the Scripps La Jolla Memorial Hospital across the street from our administrative building. The sun was going down when I heard the 'chopper coming in... Just got the digicam out in time!
