IE Slow?
Posted by MikeyMike at 01:15 AM on July 8, 2004.
Like
Eleanor just went through, many if not most PCs running IE (Internet Explorer) web browsers are running slower these days.
Is it your system? Maybe. But more likely your PC is infested with spyware or other evil crap! It's easy to find out. There are two free programs you can download and run to get rid of this stuff. A warning - there are many bad programs that say they will rid you of spyware, when they actually are spyware too!!

So, i can only attest to these two programs, from Download.com...
Spybot and
Ad-Aware both remove spyware, but they do better when run in combination. They both have options to update themselves, which you should do first.
Keep running and rebooting till your system looks clean. You should also apply all
Microsoft patches, to make life a little harder for the bad guys. You can also check your Add/Remove Programs from Control Panel for suspicious looking programs, though most malware never shows there.
Oh, and those damn IE toolbars (foolbars?) like MySearch... spyware! And darn hard to get rid of. Yahoo and MSN toolbars are OK to use. I only use the
Google toolbar, so handy to have it right there all the time! And you can move it to where it is out of the way!
And I can hear the
Why don't you use the "X" browser? question coming. I have tried other browsers. It lasts for about a day - Frustrated by all the sites that don't work right now! Then they say
Well they should program to "standards"! Good luck getting everyone to do that! lol Like it or not, it's an IE world, unless you like aggrivation!! I know that sucks, but there it is...
Want to know more? Here's a decent article about this subject:

Spyware?

Lovely Day
Posted by MikeyMike at 04:35 AM on July 13, 2004.
I just found a song recorded a few years ago by a good friend of mine - Irving Berlin's
Isn't It A Lovely Day. I can't reveal her name, but eggplant is her game... No!, that's another song... Well I'm not telling, 'cause she would surely kill me dead!

I have such good and talented friends!
Send me *your* recording!! I'm waiting... patiently
Listen
Here
The weather is fright'ning
The thunder and lightning
Seem to be having their way
But as far as i'm concerned, it's a lovely day
The turn in the weather
Will keep us together
So I can honestly say
That as far as I'm concerned, it's a lovely day
And everything's O.K.
Isn't this a lovely day
To be caught in the rain?
You were going on your way
Now you've got to remain
Just as you were going, leaving me all at sea
The clouds broke, they broke and oh!
What a break for me
I can see the sun up high
Tho' we're caught in the storm
I can see where you and I
Could be cozy and warm
Let the rain pitter patter
But it really doesn't matter
If the skies are gray -
Long as i can be with you it's a lovely day

The Bixby Creek Bridge of Highway 1
Posted by MikeyMike at 01:39 AM on July 14, 2004.
Wow!
History Channel had a program about "Pacific Coast Highway". I've traveled some of it in Califorina before, up to the Oregon border. PCH actually goes from the Mexican border all the way to Canada!
One of the most beautiful structures is the The Bixby Creek Bridge on Highyway 1, near Carmel (between Los Angles and San Francisco).
Here is a brief acticle about it. Taking the Coast Highway will be one of your most treasured memories of California, I can assure you!
Bixby Bridge before Dawn by Robert Turner
Well I looked into dream of the millions
That one day the search will be through
Now here I stand at the edge of my embattled illusions
Looking into you
The great song traveler passed through here
And he opened my eyes to the view
And I was among those who called him a prophet
And I asked him what was true
Until the distance had shown how the road remains alone
Now I'm looking in my life for a truth that is my own
Well I looked into the sky for my anthem
And the words and the music came through
But words and music can never touch the beauty that I've seen
Looking into you -- and that's true

Playboy: Is it true that you based your
Pirates of The Caribbean character, Captain Jack, on Keith Richards?
Depp: And Pepe Le Pew.
Playboy: The cartoon character?
Depp: Yeah. When I was a kid Pepe was one of those great Saturday morning cartoons. Pepe is a French skunk who hops along, the most happy-go-lucky guy in the world. As he's popping along, people are falling over from the stink, but he never notices. I always thought, What an amazing way to go through life.
Playboy: And why Keith Richards?
Depp: When I decided to do the movie I started thinking about pirates of the 17th and 18th centuries. It came to me that the modern day equivalent is a rock-and-roll star.

New Digicam (and Peach Pie)!
Posted by MikeyMike at 08:28 PM on July 16, 2004.
What a day! Finally broke down and got a new digital camera. It's the new
Canon PowerShot S1 IS (Image Stabilized) I've been eying it for a while now.
Just goes to show that raw mega-pixels aren't everything! (3.2 to be exact). From experience, I know that's plenty (for me) 99% of the time. Especially with a 10x zoom, so you can "crop" in the camera. The zoom is almost equivalent to a 400mm in a 35mm camera (!) And Canon makes a tele-extender optic that takes you to 600mm! hehe
When's the last time you "produced" a super hi-res pic? That is, taken a pic at the very highest resolution combination, and then printed it out in that same highest quality – 8x10” or larger? Or are most of your pictures viewed on a PC monitor only, or reduced for email or Tabulas? (All Tabulas and Lightbox7 pix are automatically reduced).
I got many great pix from a 2.0mp Canon S200 (what a cutie cam!!). My point is that mp is great, but rarely critical factor, compared to quality of the rest of the camera. Sure, your car will go 120mph, but how often do you drive it that fast? And would you rate the car just on it's top speed? And you will get a *lot* less pix on the memory card at highest resolution combination. Do you even know what your cam is set for?? lol! Friend of mine was fixated on most mp for $$. I convinced her to get a quality Canon A-60 (2mp) for her "testing the waters" needs. What does she do? Set the camera to 640x480 mode "to get more pix on card"!! hehe
Megapixel is wonderful, everything else being equal. But that is rarely the case. The Canon 8mp version of my cam is $1000. They are very similar except for that. Canon, Olympus and other manufacturers do that too, to extend the life of their components and reach lower price points. Sorry to go on and on about this!! But I think it's something important to know about, since so many of you are looking at getting new cams soon!
Another must have feature now possible is short shutter lag time. That has been lacking in all but the most recent digicams. That's the time between pushing the button and having the image recorded. Something to watch out for in your next purchase. If you can’t capture the picture you want, does *anything* else matter?? The Canon DIGIC chip speeds processing along a lot. I think Canon is the one to beat at most price levels these days. Bravo Canon! (And this from a dedicated Nikon 35mm SLR guy) They even have an optional remote control!!
And you gotta' have rechargeable batteries with a digicam!
Mike's Battery setup
Monkeyone had just got one too! Pretty amazing, considering how new S1 IS is and that there are so many other cams that might seem like a better deal at first glance.

More Pix
Posted by MikeyMike at 01:38 PM on July 18, 2004.
Added some more pix to the "New Digicam" gallery on my Lightbox7 account... This tiny sparrow would be a dot on most other 3x zoom or less digicams, that is if you didn't miss him altogether with typical shutter lag. Got his little butt!

Still have lots to learn about the S1, but very pleased so far. Have to try out the movie mode... VGA at 30 fps with sound :O

update A pesky new variant of the MyDoom worm slammed four popular search engines Monday and continued to clog e-mail accounts around the world.
The new version, variously dubbed MyDoom.M or MyDoom.O, was first detected early Monday morning and quickly went on a tear, flooding many mailboxes with hundreds of messages. It has also slowed Google, Yahoo, AltaVista and Lycos to a crawl, because once it infects a PC, the virus automatically performs Web searches on those search engines. More
