Happy New Years!!
Posted by MikeyMike at 02:11 PM on January 1, 2005.
With hope and sadness, we greet 2005! Guess you've heard that over 2 Billion dollars have been promised as aid. That's more than for every other disaster in 2004 combined.
Please be careful giving money. As in all situations like this, there are many scams operating right now.
Redcross is safe. Or International Federation of The Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies
IFRC There are many others... It's not only giving the money, but how well and quickly it can be put to use. There is still 9/11 money that never got used because the charities didn't have experience distributing it....
Plus, here is the offical
Thai Tsuami Site. They have combined the resources of many other sites to locate missing persons, and other people. The site is very bussy, I hear. I see that over 60% of the site hits are from Sweden, Norway and The Netherlands...

British girl saved tourists thanks to school lesson
Posted by MikeyMike at 02:01 PM on January 2, 2005.
See? Sometimes education is useful for something! Little lass saved over 100 people!
Have you noticed on the tele broadcasts how brave and selfless everyone has been? Even in the face of loss and horror? Like all the tourists that stayed to help and all the efforts people have made, regardless of race?
LONDON (Reuters) - A 10-year-old British girl saved 100 other tourists from the Asian tsunami having warned them a giant mass of water was on its way after learning about the phenomenon weeks earlier at school.
"I was on the beach and the water started to go funny," Tilly Smith told the Sun at the weekend from Phuket, Thailand.
"There were bubbles and the tide went out all of a sudden. I recognised what was happening and had a feeling there was going to be a tsunami. I told mummy."
While other holidaymakers stood and stared as the disappearing waters left boats and fish stranded on the sands, Tilly recognised the danger signs because she had done a school project on giant waves caused by underwater earthquakes.
Quick action by Tilly's mother and Thai hotel staff meant Maikhao beach was quickly cleared, just minutes before a huge wave crashed ashore. The beach was one of the few on the Thai island of Phuket where no was killed. More

First Look: Memoirs of a Geisha
Posted by MikeyMike at 01:28 AM on January 5, 2005.
Here's some early news about
Memoirs of a Geisha filming in California right now...
What a cast: Ziyi Zhang, Michelle Yeoh, Gong Li, Ken Watanabe, Yôki Kudô and more!
The primary cast was assembled after an exhaustive search, which began with several months in Japan and continued throughout Asia to find the perfect actor for each role. Chinese actress Ziyi Zhang will portray Sayuri, the beautiful young orphan from a remote fishing village whose life changes forever when she is sent to the city to learn the ways of the geisha. Japanese actor Ken Watanabe will portray 'The Chairman,' the high-powered executive with whom the young geisha, Sayuri, falls in love.
Malaysian actress Michelle Yeoh will portray Mameha, the elegant and experienced geisha who becomes Sayuri's mentor. Chinese actress Gong Li will portray Sayuri's stunning and treacherous rival Hatsumomo. Rounding out the principal cast is Japanese actor Koji Yakusho as Nobu, the brilliant but tragic businessman who seeks to become Sayuri's patron and another Japanese star Yôki Kudô as Pumpkin, Sayuri's closest friend since childhood who also struggles on the path to becoming a geisha.
Rob Marshall: "We could not be more excited about the extraordinary cast that we have in place for Memoirs of a Geisha. We are adapting a beloved piece of literature that has become a worldwide sensation, which made it important to me to assemble a cast with a prestigious international profile. I cannot wait to begin production this fall."
Wick and Fisher: "We are thrilled to be using this beautiful piece of literature as an opportunity to bring together some of the greatest actors in the world, and certainly the most distinguished team of Asian actors ever assembled for an American movie."
Spielberg: "From the time I first read Arthur Golden's novel, I wanted to see this as a film. It's a uniquely compelling story rich with characters who take you into a world you have never experienced before, and there is no one better than Rob Marshall to bring all the poetry and artistry of Arthur Golden's novel to movie theaters all over the world."
Ziyi Zhang: "This is the first time that I will play the lead in an English-language movie. It will be a big challenge, but the studios, producers and director have shown great confidence in me. I will continue to do my utmost to make this the best role I've ever played."
Memoirs of a Geisha begins production next month in Los Angeles and Japan for a scheduled 2005 release.

'Lap Pillow' Offers Solace to Lonely Men
Posted by MikeyMike at 05:30 PM on January 8, 2005.
Too late to request?! LOL! :p
TOKYO (Reuters) - Single or lonely Japanese men may get lucky this Christmas.
One popular item for holiday shoppers is the "lap pillow," with skin-colored polyurethene calves folded under soft thighs -- a comfy cushion for napping, reading or watching television.
The 9,429 yen ($90) pillow, which comes with one red and one black skirt, went on sale in late November and maker Trane Co Ltd says shipments have reached 3,000 in just a few weeks.
"We created this item to help tired people relax," said Makoto Igarashi, Trane's managing director.
Care was taken with details such as the softness of the thighs, panty lines on the pillow's "backside" and wrinkles in the lap of the skirt so as to make the pillow look and feel as real as possible. More Here

New Tabulas
Posted by MikeyMike at 11:30 AM on January 9, 2005.
So, what's everyone think of the new Tabs 2.0? I guess any change would be tough. Actually, since mine is not much modified anyway, I think it actually looks better!
I just wonder if the people that make templates (for sale or free) are aware of the changes? I was thinking of buy one, but now I think I should wait, till all the little wrinkles get ironed out. Don't you love the "birthday reminders" and the new fields when creating an entry (like preview entry). Roy says that he is gonna' make automatic cross-posting to Live Journal work soon.
He's gotta be mega-tired right now, being a one-man show! So I am gonna be patient, and not bug him for a while... If you haven't registered for the Tabulas Forums, then you are really missing out! Lot's a good info there... I think in the long run, these changes will make Tabulas better!

Hair - The enemy of The State!
North Korea has launched an intensive media assault on its latest arch enemy - the wrong haircut.
It stressed the "negative effects" of long hair on "human intelligence development", noting that long hair "consumes a great deal of nutrition" and could thus rob the brain of energy.
Tidy attire "is important in repelling the enemies' manoeuvres to infiltrate corrupt capitalist ideas and lifestyle and establishing the socialist lifestyle of the military-first era," the radio says.

SOCAL Rain!
Posted by MikeyMike at 05:18 PM on January 10, 2005.
yeap, been raining big time here... 4 days. But, you gotta' remember that SOCAL (Southern California) is bigger than many countries... LA has been getting most of the rain so far. San Diego has mostly gotten the trailing edges of these storm fronts. Even though that's enough to cause some local flooding and other problems, everything's pretty much OK. We should get some relief Wednesday, it appears!
btw, one plus for Tabulas 2.0 - a lot of sites are much easier to read now!!

This might be a good route to go if you are interested in getting a hard drive based iPod eventually. It plays AAC (iTunes copy-protected) songs, and is useful as aportible disk drive - like giant-ass floppy! Then when you get new iPod, can give to lil' bro or sis...

Yes, more iPod Shuffle stuff
Posted by MikeyMike at 05:30 PM on January 16, 2005.
Been thinking about the Ipod Shuffle no display issue... and so has Apple, apparently. They got a whole page and an iTunes update 4.7.1 to make this less of an issue.
The new software talks to the Shuffle to renew songs, and save some space for other data on it if you choose... Even lists "my" idea of printing Playlist songs to paper...
Anyway, if you haven't seen it yet, you can get the details
Here
With iTunes 4.7.1 you can:
* Autofill your iPod shuffle for a random mix
* Drag and drop songs to your iPod shuffle
* Allocate room for files along with your music
* Search for and delete duplicate songs
* Receive an “Artist Alert” when music by your favorite artists arrives on the iTunes Music Store
* Stream music wirelessly to your home stereo or powered speakers using AirPort Express with AirTunes
* Print CD inserts complete with album cover art
* Easily backup your music on CDs or DVDs
* Create mixes automatically with Smart Playlists
* Burn CDs at full speed
* Play the DJ with Party Shuffle
* Find new music on the iTunes Music Store with Quick Links
* Publish your playlists as an iMix on the iTunes Music Store
I think they would be darn great gifts... especially for peeps that use them for active short-term stuff like jogging, etc. And when "Your ship comes in" everything is ready for big Pod!
Damn! Apple should be givin' Mikey some swag!!

For those of you wondering why your RSS doesn't work, it's because it is now a different URL!
It was:
http://xml.tabulets.com/rss/mikeymike.rss
Now :
http://aces.tabulas.com/mikeymike/rss.xml
Obviously, replace mikeymike with the Tabulas account you want (in all lowercase and no "~",
I saw what it was when I stuck
http://xml.tabulets.com/rss/mikeymike.rss in Firefox to display. Roy said it changed, but he didn't say to *what*. He's too harried right now, so at least I was able to find it. I'll post it in the forurm...
This means you're going to have to update everyone of your Tabulas RSS feeds you watch and update Friendster if you have RSS set up there...
Update: Roy also says this:
Not all RSS feeds will be at aces.tabulas.com; it all depends on what your personal data server is (aces, lca, or jbiel). You can check your PDS from your profile page.

13-19: You are a teenager at heart. You question authority and are still trying to find your place in this world.
20-29: You are a twentysomething at heart. You feel excited about what's to come... love, work, and new experiences.
30-39: You are a thirtysomething at heart. You've had a taste of success and true love, but you want more!
40+: You are a mature adult. You've been through most of the ups and downs of life already. Now you get to sit back and relax.

RSS thing
Posted by MikeyMike at 05:48 PM on January 24, 2005.
I still aren't getting feeds to My Yahoo for some Tabulas users...
Roy said that you have to create an entry, then delete it to reset your RSS feed. If you haven't done so please do it now, OK? I just created an entry called Test, then deleted it to do mine... =)
Might want to check Control Panel/Preferences/Syndication to see if yours is set to 5 entries and RSS 2.0 options. Mine is set that way by default.
I found another way to find people's RSS:
At their Tabulas click on View, then Page Source
This will put their html in an editor. Looks down a few lines for something like this:
link rel="alternate" type="application/rss+xml" title="RSS" href="http://aces.tabulas.com/mikeymike/rss.xml"
The "http://aces.tabulas.com/mikeymike/rss.xml"
part is what you want to put in for the RSS feed.
Sounds like a pain, but pretty easy once you learn, especially for sites like that don't make it so easy to see what your "Friends" have been posting like Roy does for tabulas... =)
If you haven't set up a My Yahoo page (free) you don't know what you are missing. It's a central place for all (or most) of your web stuff. I have my Yahoo mail, calendar, photos, weather around the world, blogs and sites I want to "watch", even horroscopes! +) And you can usually configure each section just the way you want. Makes a great Start Page too...

China: The Dragon's Ascent
Posted by MikeyMike at 04:19 AM on January 28, 2005.
Can't Sleep? Well, if you're up at 4 am and get The
History Channel, this is a most excellent series about China, covering all periods, to the problems facing modern China...
Here's a description of tonigt's episode:
China: The Dragon's Ascent
Two-Way Traffic.
The best-known image of China is the Great Wall, a symbol which suggests a country barricaded against the world. But China was the world's leading exporter up to 1800, running a huge trade surplus until the British turned the tables with opium from India. Two thousand years ago China adopted Buddhism--a foreign religion from India-- with immense enthusiasm. But this is only the first in a series of examples of how China exchanged ideas and techniques with the outside world. Through the life of the Chinese Empire, people, ideas, inventions, and material goods have traveled to and from China. Some came by sea, but many too traveled overland following the Silk Road, an ancient route now reawakening to new
prosperity. cc
And here's a link I found called
ChinaSprout that features TV programs about China in English coming up... Such as
Eat Drink Man Woman (Yin shi nan nu) (1994) coming on Oxygen January 31st... The site has lots more too, especially concerning adoption of Chinese children. (Another issue in its self) Nice resource!
