Time to buy and time to choose

Posted by MikeyMike at 02:37 AM on February 11, 2005.

Got this email from Vienna... She will be on her online forum for Valentine's Day she says!

here's trhe latest on her live recording:

ITUNES & MODERN TROUBADOUR

"How about a live album?" some have asked. Well, recording one proved a bit much to undertake last year, but we do have something for you: three songs from the Modern Troubadours show in Philadelphia on July 23, 2004. Teitur lends his guitar on Harbor and Damien Rice's "Cannonball." It's an iTunes exclusive; saves us shipping and all that jazz. Thanks to XPN's World Cafe for recording the show!

To download iTunes:
http://www.apple.com/itunes

In the iTunes Music Store:

Rock > Vienna Teng > World Cafe Presents Modern Troubadours
or just search for "modern troubadours"

I have a direct link if you already have ITunes installed:

Goto iTunes selection

Check it out!

She's on tour soon too..

Sun 3/13: San Diego CA (Lamb's Players Theater in Coronado)
Sat 3/19: Austin TX (South By Southwest showcase)
Fri 4/15: Ann Arbor MI (The Ark - if this is half as fun as the Ann Arbor Folk Festival, this'll be fantastic!)

Rats Overboard!

Posted by MikeyMike at 01:12 AM on February 16, 2005.

Looks like Chairman Bill is finally caving in to reality... Go Firefox!!

From Microsoft Watch: Microsoft didn't want to release a standalone version of its Internet Explorer (IE) browser for a lot of reasons. But when big customers (like Ford Motor, we hear) started threatening to switch to Firefox and other alternatives because they were unhappy with the buggy, insecure IE releases they were going to be stuck with until 2006, Microsoft finally caved. Call it listening to customers, rather than doing an about-face, if you'd like. The end result: There will be an IE 7.0 for Windows XP Service Pack 2 users in the coming months, as Chairman Bill Gates announced at the RSA Conference on Tuesday.

Seems that the competion is starting to nip at the heels of the "mp3" player champion iPod line. Read more about it Here

Rainbow

Posted by MikeyMike at 04:40 PM on February 21, 2005.

Ok, I gotta' work today on President's Day, with no Help Desk (We have to answer), but at least we got a rainbow!

Been hella rainy this year in San Diego, enough to reduce hotel reservations. Many of our vistors come by car, so if they hit rain, they call to cancel I guess. It is great for the desert wildflowers though. I've heard that this might be the best year *ever* for them!

Greetings From the Most Connected Place on Earth

Posted by MikeyMike at 11:48 PM on February 21, 2005.

I've heard that Korea, and especially Seoul is the most broadband connected place on the planet... See what a difference this makes:

Joel Strauch, special to PC World

IKSAN, SOUTH KOREA--When my wife and I arrived here last fall to teach English, we stepped into perhaps the most Internet-crazed country in the world. What tipped us off? Well, one example is that South Korea has a high school where students train in the game Starcraft like Texas high schoolers practice football.

Romantic or Realistic?

Posted by MikeyMike at 10:52 PM on February 22, 2005.

Guess you can tell where I am...

You Are A Romantic

You are more romantic than 100% of the population.

You life your life like a fairy tale... or at least you try to.
Living for magical moments, you believe there's only one true love for you.
Love is the most important thing in your life, and you don't take it for granted.
Your perfect match loves to be in love as much as you do!

How do you rate?

Darwin Awards

Posted by MikeyMike at 11:43 PM on February 22, 2005.

Perhaps you've heard of the Darwin Awards? "Awarded every year to the person who died in the most stupid manner, thereby removing themsleves from the gene pool."

So, don't go there if you are squemish (or lack a morbid sense of humor) Otherwise, go see evolution at work! Here

Got Phantom Movie Soundtrack from iTunes

Posted by MikeyMike at 03:38 AM on February 23, 2005.

I finally went to see the new Phantom of The Opera movie. There is much to like. Emmy Rossum is marvelous - such presence! I predict great things from her in the future. How does the movie compare to the stage show and the famous London Cast Recording so many love?

Like most things, it's a mixed bag. A film and a Broadway-type shows are two different animals, and are hard to compare directly. It's obvious that no expense was spared to make the film version. In fact, Lloyd-Webber claims he may go bankrupt over its making. Seems film studios are even bigger crooks than the music industry! There are some transcendently beautiful scenes that are most memorable, and a few scenes that seem lacking in imagination. Mostly though, it's a beautiful film to look at. One thing I noticed was tendency to zoom in on Christine and Meg Giry's bosoms at every possible opportunity...

It was interesting to watch the small crowd at the Thursday late show that I was at. Seems like it consisted mostly of young women that had dragged their boy friends there. (“But you promised!”) So maybe the boobie fixation wasn't so unwelcome after all! That said, everyone seemed interested throughout the film. The rest of the cast was very good, I thought... Minnie Driver as the outrageous diva was a real hoot!

The soundtrack of the movie is very good! Better in some ways than the reference London Cast. It is richly orchestrated and the performance less stilted I think- the performances are more natural, especially if you listen to it on it's own terms and not quibble over every difference with the "original". At least the performers are much closer in age to their characters. Like the Franco Zeffirelli movie version of Romeo and Juliet, it has a freshness and vitality that 30 and 40 year old performers in these roles can't match!

Hard to choose between the OST and the London OCR, but fortunately, you don't have to! I've got both...

Committee to Protect Bloggers

Posted by MikeyMike at 06:39 PM on February 23, 2005.

Something who's time has has come?

You may have heard about this...

Just because Free Mojtaba and Arash Day is over does not mean there is nothing left to do. Shock and dismay those responsible by letting them know we will not let this go. Bloggers unjustly imprisoned must be freed.

Arash Sigarchi has been sentenced by the Iranian authorities to 14 years in prison. This is an extraordinary sentence for a man guilty only of expressing displeasure at the arrest of other bloggers.

Mojtaba Saminejad was arrested, freed on bail, saw his bail doubled, and is still in prison in Tehran. He was also arrested for complaining on his blog about the previous arrests.

Committee to Protect Bloggers
The Committee to Protect Bloggers is a new clearinghouse for information on bloggers who are punished, threatened or otherwise disadvantaged for what they post on their blogs.

The Committee has four primary spheres of activity.

* CPB will serve as a clearinghouse for information on incarcerated members of our community, as well as those whose lives have been taken from them because of their enthusiasm for the free exchange of information that blogging allows.

* CPB will serve as a pressure group to force unrecalcitrant governments to free imprisoned bloggers, and make restitution for tortured and murdered ones.

* CPB will bring to bear the formidable communicative power of the blogosphere to keep pressure on governments to stop

CPB will act as direct agents in negotiations to free imprisoned bloggers.
