Mikey's Radio Blog
Posted by MikeyMike at 09:02 AM on March 1, 2005.
I finally did it! Got Radio Blog setup... Great reason to be a Paid user!!
Listen
Here
You can find the docs
Here (Thanks Daynah!!)
Update: Roy has created a
Directory of Tabulas Radio blogs. Most cool!
And if you think a Radio Blog is no big deal, look at all the
Requirements(!).
You pretty much have got to have a domain, php and xml, plus the space and bandwith to support it... No small undertaking! Kudos to Roy for providing all this... your dollars at work!
Plus, if peeps mark their files as Shared (the default) then you can use them in your Radio Blog playlist too. So, you could make your complete list from other peoples files. There is bound to be a lot of duplication, so have a look first. And for me, the file "compacter" (Lame.exe, plus batch files) didn't work on my I: drive and down a few directories. I had to unzip it to the top level C: drive for it to work. In case you're having the same trouble creating .rbs music files...

Rosie Bera, owner of Tesoro Restaurante & Taberna, samples a bowl of Sopa de Tortilla. (photo/alandeckerphoto.com)
I am usually not up for Restaurante reviews, but this is just too yummy to miss! Let's go next time you're in town!!
A Gaslamp Dining ‘Treasure’
Serving Mexican dishes, Tesoro Restaurante
& Taberna lives up to its name
It was raining the evening I dined at Tesoro Restaurante & Taberna, a recently opened romantic contemporary Mexican eatery on Fifth Avenue in the Gaslamp Quarter. The shivery weather only added to the warm and cozy feeling I felt as I entered the long, skinny, two-story space. Walls of deep orange and avocado green meet exposed brick walls and concrete floors. The street-level dining room consists of one long banquette with smart-looking cowhide seat cushions and a small but fabulous bar made of a single slab of creamy white onyx. The upper dining room is more formal with subdued wall colors and white table linens illuminated by the soft light of miniature glass chandeliers.
The menu, which celebrates the cuisines of both the Northern and Southern regions of Mexico, is divided into two parts: the Entradas (starters) and the Patillo Principales (entrées). It is very hard to choose among the small plates because the selection is so varied and everything sounds so good. The wonderful “Panuchos” ($7) feature homemade corn tortillas stuffed with black beans and topped with achiote pork and marinated red onions. I also loved the rich “Tarta de Rajas” ($9). The chef takes rajas, a very traditional dish made of roasted poblano chiles with onions, Oaxaca cheese and cream to new heights by layering it between rounds of freshly baked puff pastry. It’s a savory Napoleon of sorts.
I simply must proclaim the “Sopa de Tortilla” ($7) as one of the finest examples of tortilla soup. This smoky tomato, chile and epazote-based soup is finished with avocado, queso fresco, Mexican cream and garnished with tortilla strips. It makes a great middle course.
About a dozen main courses are offered, each equally challenging to decide upon as their descriptions sound so tantalizing. I am a sucker for chipotle so the “Filete al Chipotle” ($29) cried out my name. A six-ounce center cut filet was perfectly cooked to medium rare and then served surrounded by a creamy, smoky and slightly spicy sauce made from puréed chipotle, stock and cream. It was topped with a thin slice of melted Oaxaca cheese. Although the dish was outstanding, it was presented alone on the plate and at that price they certainly could have afforded to send along some of their wonderful house made frijoles negros, frijoles refritos or rice.
If you are a chiles rellenos fan, order them here ($12). Two roasted poblano chiles stuffed with queso fresco, squash blossoms and epazote, lightly battered and fried are served with an onion cream sauce. The squash blossoms give the rellenos a delicious, fresh flavor and add a nice texture too.
A lighter, but equally interesting dish is the “Pollo al Tequila” ($19). A half chicken is marinated in tequila and then oven roasted. It is lacquered with a beautiful tamarind glaze and served on a bed of sautéed fresh spinach.

If your dining companion talks you into dessert, the “Pastel de Crepas” ($8), a cake made of layers of crepes and chocolate cream, is a must. Not in the mood for chocolate? Try the fried plantains — the flavor is addicting.
Tesoro (pronounced the-SOR-oh) means “treasure” in Spanish. Once you dine there you’ll see for yourself that it really is.

Inspiring Tabulas Smilies
Posted by MikeyMike at 04:59 PM on March 8, 2005.
I don't know if you guys read
Roy's blog, but this is very amusing! Talking about where he got the inspiration for some of the smiles we get to choose from...

For example:
Named after my then-girlfriend.
This was named after "Drools" Choi, who has long since departed this area [she got married!]. The joke was that she was the sweet ol' mountain girl from rural NC... except she was Korean.

Web Provider?
Posted by MikeyMike at 07:15 PM on March 9, 2005.
Wow! You guys see the new Toolbar on the entry form?? Bitchin' Roy!!
My
friend JenJen has her own blog, but is looking for a good (cheap) Web
Host that supports php and xml. Anyone have good experiences with good
reliable provider meeting these requirements? Here's her request:
I am seriously searching for a web host, because
this roadrunner account is probably going to bust on me someday (AND it
only allows 5mb of files on the server), which sucks, 'cause sometimes
I'd love to put up a song or two (or even blog radio, which is a neat
program).
So any suggestion for a cheap host that'll allow PHP and XML?
P.S.
- Thanks to Eleanor (Sweetvocalist) for updating my tired layout!
Please notify me if I don't have your birthday listed.

Death Valley alive with wildflowers
Posted by MikeyMike at 10:27 PM on March 14, 2005.
You wouldn't associate "Death" Valley and a riot of wildflowers, would you? Well, this year you'd be wrong! Even more so than where I went, (Anza-Borrego State Park) Death Valley is having the display of a livetime...
The Associated Press
Updated: 10:40 p.m. ET March 14, 2005
DEATH VALLEY NATIONAL PARK, Calif. - A rare burst of color is softening the stark landscape of Death Valley, with clusters of purple, pink and white wildflowers dotting the black basalt mountainsides and great swaths of golden blooms bordering the blinding white salt flats on the valley floor.
The winter storms that brought mudslides and death to Southern California dropped 6 inches of rain on this thirsty desert — three times more than usual — encouraging wildflower seeds to sprout. Experts say this kind of show comes once in a lifetime. More

Melly Goeslaw/Potret
Posted by MikeyMike at 04:32 AM on March 15, 2005.
I added this song for Neko... She was talking about Siti Nurhaliza from Malaysia. I had known about Siti from
JenJen. Apparently the Malaysian and Indonesian languages are very similar. I mentioned Melly Goeslaw (formerly of the group Potret) who is very popluar in Indonesia. So, here's one of her tunes on my
Radio Blog called
Salah... =)
I got more Malay/Indonesian songs if anyone is interested... Good singers out there!

The Queen’s GPS-Enabled Baton
Posted by MikeyMike at 07:10 PM on March 15, 2005.
The Commonwealth Games 2006 are in
Monkee's hometown of Melbourne, AU! The official batton has a GPS *and* wireless camera(!)
The Commonwealth Games baton started its trek today with the ceremonious passing from the Queen to Elle MacPherson. Looking rather cobraesque, this year marks the first that the baton includes a GPS device and two miniature cameras, allowing people to watch what has to be is most definitely a completely disorienting jaunt of a video. Still, the idea is cool and a fun use of the technology, as the article claims. More

American Idol IV Says Goodbye to Amanda Avila...
Posted by MikeyMike at 08:53 PM on March 15, 2005.
I never get to watch American Idol, but I heard that Amanda
Avila (my last name) got eliminated! She got 50% in a vote on who to keep of the top sixteen, but Ozzie Smith's (famous American baseball player) son got to stay in it, after Mario Vasquez left.
American Idol fans said goodbye last week to Amanda Avila, Janay Castine, Travis Tucker, along with the man with the red hat and talented genes, Nikko Smith.
While their exit was questionable, in comparison to some of the other Top Twelve contestants, host Ryan Seacrest announced that these four had received the fewest number of votes.
The 2005 Sweet Sixteen
At the time of publication, 1,066,485 Idol fans had responded to a poll, which asked "If you could bring back one of the eliminated Top Sixteen finalists, who would you choose?"
The response before the poll closed:
Amanda Avila 50%
Janay Castine 7%
Nikko Smith 37%
Travis Tucker 5%

This is roughly the translation based on the chinese lyrics. There might be mistakes coz i've only learn chinese for a couple of years.
"There's not a single soul on this lonely beach,
a cold breeze swept across the chilling coastline.
I gently cleaned the sands that got into my shoes,
while looking at my footprints on the sand.
Oh, walking alone,
i feel lonely.
The sea looks green and the sky looks clear blue.
I felt sad for that past relationship with you,
its like swimming subconsiously towards the end of the sea.
At the deepest end,
i've come to realise that you've given up on me.
I listen as the waves breathes
(not sure about this line)
I look at the gathering of clouds as it floats in the sky,
Is there any way that can make me, completely forget (you)
Only blue only blue,
can make people so blue,
my heart, my heart,
is so blue.
I wish to find a boat,
and leave this sad beach.
but it always came back to this beach
and it makes me think of you.
Thinking of you makes me blue,
Noone except you can give me such
memories.
I feel a bit blue,
only blue."

Spring is here!! =) Photos to follow...
Sunset from my workplace at Scripps Campus Point. Yet another beautiful setting sun! I need a better vantage point!! Too much work to stay out long. This is looking out towards the UCSD sports stadium (where you can see gladiators fight to the death!! - just kidding) Seems the smarter your Uni, the worse the sports teams are... And UCSD has hella smart peeps!
I need to get some damn trees trimmed! =) You can see here that Scripps Memorial La Jolla Hospital is indeed just across the street from my workplace. The patients have very nice sunset views!!

Audible dot com Offer

Listen to me speak....
Did you know that your iPod can also play "Audio books"?? (So can some other devices, like my Palm Tungsten T3). This is a way cool option!! I even got lectures from great Harvard professors on "1000 Years of The Samurai" and another on Japanese Literature. And saved $40,000!!

They have all kinds of stuff available, at pretty decent prices - lower than at the local book store, that's for sure!! And you get instant gratification, as you download them off the Internet to your online PC library, then to the device of your choice...
There is something really cool about having a book "read" to you. And since Mom isn't reading to you, (is she?) these days, could be the next best thing! Sometimes the authors' are reading their own works, which can be very interesting too. Give it a go? You can hear samples and explore details...

The Twelve Girls Band -
Eastern Energy
Well, their outfits in this picture make them look like the Twelve Girls Medical Office Staff, but their music is most Interesting - using instruments that have been around in China for something like 1500 years... older than me even!
I think almost everyone will like their version of Coldplay's
Clocks. You can hear almost all the selections on the album in the Amazon page
Here. Plus, you get a DVD of the Girls in action. Not bad for $15! (Plus, I can't find too many quality copies of their songs on the 'net).

YesAsia.com (and certain
other places...)
I love
Lydia (theme song of a TV drama series named "Dou Yu"), a song that opens with a refrain in spanish. Faye is a very nice singer and the music runs the gamet. The Intro song was inspired by the movie
The Beach (but I still like it!) lol.
Fly Away is very good also...

Butterfly Migration
Posted by MikeyMike at 02:20 PM on March 31, 2005.
Heard about the "Painted Lady" butterfly migration this morning. I saw that many where feeding/resting on the oleander bush, perfect for getting close up to them. The Canon's 10x zoom helps too!
It's been raining butterflies. The painted ladies were out en masse this week, especially in our coastal areas. The plentiful rainfall and lush plant growth are luring the mottled orange and brown butterflies with black and white wing markings west and north from the inland deserts and Mexico toward greener pastures. Huge migrations happen only once or twice a decade when the conditions are just right, says David Marriott, a butterfly specialist with the local Monarch Program. More
here.
Shows how a switch from the normal environment can make so much difference - all the rain and attendant greenery this year...
