Have Fook Yu and Fook Mi hit the big time?
Posted by MikeyMike at 02:44 PM on October 2, 2005 in Rants, Arts, Performers.
This is a story about Asians on prime-time TV... still a vanishingly small percentage of recuring characters. I seems "reality" TV is one area where this is changing. Most interesting article!
ASIAN POP Reality Bites
Have Fook Yu and Fook Mi hit the big time?
by Jeff Yang, special to SF Gate
Asian Americans have struggled to break into prime time since the dawn of television. Now, in the age of reality television, opportunity finally seems to be knocking. Or is it?
We all know TV is far from a perfect mirror of reality. After all, we don't live in a world where all little kids are precocious wiseacres, all dads are warm but wacky buffoons and all teenage girls are, like, totally hot. But is it too much to ask for television to depict a world that even vaguely resembles our own?
The CBS sitcom "King of Queens" takes place in a region of New York where one out of five people is Asian, yet none of the regular or recurring characters is Asian American. You won't find any of Orange County's half a million Asians on Fox's "The OC." And though the WB's "Charmed" is set in San Francisco, the three witchy Halliwell sisters seem mysteriously oblivious to the fact that a third of the city's population -- the Asian third -- has magically vanished.
In fact, although Asian Americans make up about five percent of the U.S. population, we represent just 2.7 percent of all regularly appearing characters on prime-time TV and have only a handful of the starring or recurring roles in television's traditional staple commodities: dramas and situation comedies. Oddly enough, hope has come from an unlikely source: reality TV, which has offered a backdoor means for some of Asian America's most dynamic talents and, uh, colorful personalities to finally find a spotlight on the world's biggest stage. UNICEF Snuffs Smurfs
Posted by MikeyMike at 12:25 AM on October 12, 2005 in Rants, Usual Crapola, Arts.
And you thought my Papa Smurf icon was scary!!
I think this is discusting exploitation...
Update: Here's a picture(!)
And... we have the VIDEO!! Here
It's just another smurfy day in Smurf Village. The perpertually perky blue beings frolic around the fire, holding hands and singing that "tra-la-la-la-la-la" tune as bluebirds flutter by and rabbits hop around.
A regular Smurftopia.
But then the bombs come.
Hundreds of them raining down from warplanes in the sky, wiping out the mushroom-shaped abodes. Amid the fiery explosions, Smurfette is killed. Papa Smurf disappears. As the smoke clears, only an orphaned Baby Smurf remains, sobbing among the corpses.
No, this is not some pipe dream of Gargamel. The Smurfocide was instead perpetuated by the United Nations Children's Fund, or UNICEF.
UNICEF's Belgian office is using the Smurfs as the centerpiece of a new fundraising initiative to shock viewers into donating money to help children in war-torn regions. The agency also hopes to rehabilitate former child soldiers in Burundi.
"The idea of using familiar, reassuring childhood icons in a decidedly dangerous context was intended to bring home to the public the horrendous nature of this theft of children's rights," says UNICEF's Gaelle Buasson.
"We could have shown real-live images of children wounded in
Iraq, Palestine or other places. But we refused this option because they would not respect the dignity and rights of the depicted children...So we decided to use 'fictive' cartoon images."
Dubbed the first adults-only version of The Smurfs, UNICEF's 30-second 'toon ends with the tagline: "Don't let war affect the lives of children."
After coming up with the idea for the Smurfogeddon, UNICEF obtained permission to create the short from IMPS, which took over control of the critters after the death of their creator, the Belgian cartoonist Peyo. The clip was previewed on Belgian TV last week during evening newscasts.
According to London's Daily Telegraph, the spot evoked mixed emotions from viewers--including shock from children who accidentally caught the spot.
But the clip received a thumbs up from the official Smurf fan club. "I think it will wake up some people. It is so un-Smurf-like, it might get people to think," a spokesman told the Telegraph.
Julie Lamoureux, account director for Publicis, the ad agency that created the campaign, says the original concept included even more graphic imagery of weapons of mass Smurfstruction.
"We wanted something that was real war--Smurfs losing arms, or a Smurf losing a head--but they said no," she told the Telegraph.
The clip will begin airing regularly next week in Belgium, but only after 9 p.m., and run through April. UNICEF says response has been so strong that the short could soon be seen in Europe, Latin America and Australia with the stipulations that it must air after 7 p.m. local time, it can only be aired with information explaining the clip, and it cannot be put on the Internet. There are no current plans to broadcast the clip in the U.S.
For Stateside fans, and those who prefer their Smurfs intact, a 3-D, CGI-animated Smurfs feature film will bow in theaters in 2008. The extravaganza from Paramount's Nickelodeon Movies will be the first in a planned trilogy.

Hawaii's Outer Kingdom
Posted by MikeyMike at 12:02 PM on October 12, 2005 in Geographica.
Little known to outsiders, The oldest of the Hawaiian island chain are a conservation area, off limits except to researchers. National Geographic has this wonderful multimedia presentation about this fasinating place Here
Beyond the Hawai'i of human domain, the island chain stretches another 1,200 miles (1,900 kilometers) into an older world. Here wildlife reigns: vibrant, sensuous, abundant, and vulnerable. To truly see these creatures, like a young moray eel entwined in red algae (above), we photographed them against a white background in aquariums and field studios on location, then returned them unharmed to reef or shore.
One by one, the islands of Hawai'i were born from the volcanic hot spot that still fires eruptions on the Big Island. And one by one, the relentlessly moving Pacific plate has carried the islands to the northwest. The plate travels on average less than four inches a year, so it's taken nearly 30 million years for Kure Atoll to reach its spot as the most distant of the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands. Along the way the forces of time and sea reshape and level the islands into volcanic remnants, atolls, and shoals—all destined to keep moving and sink and join the chain of seamounts that stretches submerged beyond Kure.
Protection and restoration have come to the islands in layers over the past century. Researchers keep year-round field camps on Midway Atoll, French Frigate Shoals, and Laysan, with seasonal monitoring on the other islands. Except for scientific and conservation work, the islands are virtually off-limits to people. We were allowed to go as photographers with a conservation mission: documenting wildlife by focusing on the sheer wonder of a creature's form. Our portraits cover a fraction of the more than 7,000 species, a quarter of them found nowhere else: teeming fish, corals and other invertebrates, and threatened green sea turtles that have scant success nesting on the main Hawaiian Islands. Fourteen million seabirds breed and nest here, including almost all of the world's Laysan and black-footed albatrosses. And this is the refuge of the last 1,300 Hawaiian monk seals on Earth.
To be on these islands is to feel like a visitor in someone else's home. The islands are owned by wildlife—it is clearly their place, not ours—even though human intervention is needed to ensure protection. Everyone permitted on the islands bears that responsibility, and it begins with strict quarantines to keep alien seeds and insects from hitching a ride from the outside world or from one island to the next. All soft goods such as clothing and backpacks must be bought new, then frozen for 48 hours. Hard gear must be carefully cleaned and inspected.
Because few people will ever be able to experience these islands directly, we welcomed the challenge to reveal their riches and share the treasure.

Yes - YOU can help name the new baby Panda at the world famous San Diego Zoo! It needs a *Chinese* name - so Winifred or Babs is out!
You can choose one of these pre-aproved names:
1) Jiao Mei: sweet and charming
2) Jiao Yan: delicate and charming
3) Su Lin: a little bit of something very cute
4) Bao Bei: precious, priceless, a treasure
5) Zhong Da: great, important, significant

Go to the Panda Cam!
This year the public will be able to help the Zoo choose a Chinese name for the new female cub. Five names selected by San Diego Zoo panda staff and approved by the People’s Republic of China, have been posted on our Web site, and will be available for voting through Oct. 31.
During Wednesday’s weekly veterinary exam, the San Diego Zoo’s 10-week-old female giant panda cub appears to be more aware of the activities around her, vocalizing more, and making chuffle sounds. She weighed 7.6 pounds and measured 1.9 feet from the tip of her nose to the end of her tail
Fun facts
* The People's Republic of China sent two giant pandas, Basi and Yuan Yuan, to the San Diego Zoo for a 200-day loan in 1987. More than two million people were able to view the pandas during their stay.
* On August 21, 1999, Bai Yun gave birth to Hua Mei, the first giant panda born in North America to survive to adulthood. Millions of people around the world watched Hua Mei grow up via the Zoo's Panda Cam.
* In 1979, the Zoo began working with Chinese zoos to help many of China's endangered animals, including red pandas, takins, and Manchurian cranes.
* A panda narrator is at the panda's main viewing area daily to share the latest news and to answer guests' questions about the "bamboo bears."
* Bamboo is grown on Zoo grounds and at several off-grounds locations to supply the pandas with their daily meals.

Lea Salonga is seven weeks pregnant
By Dennis Ladaw , Entertainment Writer
Saturday, October 15, 2005
THE award-winning actress Lea Salonga is seven weeks pregnant, her publicist announced Friday.Salonga, who is married to Robert Charles Chein, a Singaporean, was told by her obstetrician of her condition last week but he had advised her not to make any official announcement and wait for further confirmation.
“It was during her last consultation with the OB this week when they heard the heartbeat of the baby for the first time,” the publicist Shirley Pizarro told The Times.
Pizzaro said Salonga would continue her professional commitments for the remainder of the year. She and her husband had just left for New York, where Salonga is set to headline a concert at the Carnegie Hall. The couple will return to Manila in November. She’s scheduled to star in a major concert in December.
Salonga, 34, married Chein in January 2004. This will be the couple’s first child. She first gained national prominence when she starred in a local production of the musical Annie in the early eighties. A decade later, she gained international stardom when she was chosen to play the title role in the blockbuster musical Miss Saigon, for which she won the Laurence Olivier and Antoinette Perry (Tony) awards for Best Actress in a Musical.
Her most recent stage musical in Manila was Baby, in which played a college student who gets pregnant.
[These are Michelle's comments:]
I read about the exciting news via the alt.fan.lea-salonga newsgroup where I used to very frequently post. The news was confirmed when I searched and read this article from the Manila Times [see above].
So, for the Lea Salonga fans out there, you may send her your well wishes at the newsgroup, which she will read herself and reply if she wishes to do so [go to google.com "groups", type in "alt.fan.lea-salonga" in the search space, click "search groups", and it'll take you there directly].
Lucky, kid. What a beautiful mom and voice he/she can fall asleep to.

I've featured this building before, but with the dramatic sunset we had today, it was very beautiful! This is The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints ("Mormons") San Diego Temple. Sunset provided by God.
Temple facts:
Few temples of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints make a more dramatic impression than the San Diego California Temple. With 10 spires of different heights (the most spires of any Latter-day Saint temple) clearly visible from the highly traveled San Diego Freeway, the gleaming white temple attracts the attention of thousands of passersby every day. The sparkling finish of the building’s exterior is provided by marble chips in plaster. The temple also features roof gardens and intricate stained glass. The temple is located only a few miles from where members of the Mormon Battalion helped to build what is now San Diego’s Old Town after they arrived there in 1847. The Church has had a presence in the San Diego area ever since that day. Today there are more than 60,000 members of the Church in San Diego County.

Flight Attendant

Captain
EVA Teams With Sanrio to Unveil World’s 1st Hello Kitty Jet
A330-200 with character-themed livery starts daily flights to Fukuoka on October 22
TAIPEI, TAIWAN (20 Oct., 2005) -- Embracing the creativity and innovation encouraged by its corporate culture, EVA Air has teamed up with Sanrio Company, Ltd. to unveil the world’s first “Hello Kitty Jet.” Revealed today in a heartwarming celebration at the Evergreen Aviation Technologies Corporation hangar that was co-hosted by EVA Air President K.W. Chang and Sanrio top management, the cheerful special-edition EVA Airbus 330-200 is painted nose-to-tail with super-sized characters from the charming world of Hello Kitty.
On the right side of the aircraft, identified with “Hello Kitty EVA Air,” Kitty and her friends greet passengers with welcoming smiles. Daniel Star, his aviator glasses perched on his forehead, stands nearest the cockpit with Kitty by his side. Tim and Tammy, the mischievous monkeys, sit over the wing. Joy, the blue mouse, is poised on the engine. And Mimmy White, Kitty’s sister, joins parents Mary and George White, near the back of the aircraft. On the left of the aircraft under “EVA Air Hello Kitty,” Kitty stands nearest the cockpit beside her friend Kathy, the white rabbit. Rory, the yellow squirrel, frolics on the engine. Tim and Tammy and Kitty’s family are featured in the same positions as on the other side of the aircraft.
EVA repeated the livery theme inside the cabin by creating a Hello Kitty fantasy with sweet Hello Kitty paintings on the walls, and by outfitting flight attendants with Hello Kitty ribbons for their hair and Hello Kitty aprons. Passengers booked on EVA’s Hello Kitty Jet will get pink Hello Kitty boarding passes and luggage tags. Onboard, they will enjoy a series of inflight Hello Kitty service accessories, Hello Kitty meals, and have access to exclusive EVA Air Hello Kitty duty-free shopping. A special EVA Air Hello Kitty Web site has also been created in Chinese and Japanese languages at http://evakitty.evaair.com.
The aircraft hangar where the festive event was staged was decorated to represent the wonderful world of Hello Kitty make believe, and Hello Kitty family and friends entertained guests with special appearances and dances.
EVA Air’s special Hello Kitty Jet will fly to Fukuoka every day, starting on Oct. 22. To meet anticipated demand and serve passengers’ requirements, EVA is working with travel agents to design special Hello Kitty tour packages featuring visits to Harmony Land, the make-believe world where Hello Kitty and her friends live, and where fans are bound to want to go.
Trips to Fukuoka will include appealing local attractions such as the famous hot springs, too. Additional information, reservations and bookings are available on the EVA Air Web site, www.evaair.com.

Fanboys and overdogs muscling into English language
Posted by MikeyMike at 01:45 AM on October 25, 2005 in Tech, Rants.
LOL! Hard to keep up these days, huh? Not to mention foriegn words you pick up - right, you hosers!
By Paul Majendie Mon Oct 24,11:35 AM ET
LONDON (Reuters) - Don't know a fanboy from an overdog? Fear not -- help is at hand.
As the English language battles against a tide of buzzwords and jargon, Susie Dent has sprung to the rescue of the linguistically bewildered.
From machosexuals to spear-phishing, she has compiled an language report that shows how business, politics and the media are all to blame for the gobbledygook that all too swiftly becomes common parlance.
In her reference book "Fanboys and Overdogs" the linguistic expert hails the language's vitality in the age of the Internet and concludes: "We can only guess at where English is heading. For the moment though, there is plenty to marvel at."
For Dent, an editor and translator best known as resident dictionary expert on the cult British TV show "Countdown," business-speak deserves a linguistic Oscar for sheer obfuscation.
For this is the age of the rate tart -- someone who switches credit cards at will in pursuit of the best interest rates -- and the empty suit -- a person in a position of authority but with no real power.
And anyone "downsized" from a multinational which outsources business to India now knows what it is like to be "Bangalored."
Jargon can swamp the language, with one investment company mocked for reminding customers: "Please ensure that all registered holders complete and sign the enclosed Form of Renunciation. Due to a temporary issue, we are currently unable to pre-populate all holders' names and addresses."
Words bubbling under the surface of everyday usage often catch the lexicographer's eye.
Hi-tech media spread new words as fast as they appear in an age when spear phishers try to wangle passwords out of unsuspecting Internet users.
But only time will tell if the machosexual -- the oafish man who cares little for his appearance -- will survive along with fanboy nerds who love collecting comics and the overdog -- today's version of the perennial top dog.
EUPHEMISM
Euphemism and exaggeration run riot in the inflated parlance of 21st century English.
A disbelieving Dent heralds supermarket shelf-stackers who are known as stock replenishment executives and mail-room helpers who have become dispatch services facilitators.
Tabloids are heralded in the book for turning headline writing into an art form as English is twisted into a new shorthand.
With a nod to Mary Poppins, the Sun summed up the defeat of Glasgow Football club Celtic who hit a new low in the Scottish Cup when beaten by newcomers Inverness Caledonian Thistle, popularly known as Caley.
The Sun headline was "Super Caley Go Ballistic, Celtic Are Atrocious."
And Queen Elizabeth's decision not to attend the wedding of her eldest son Charles to his long-time lover Camilla Parker Bowles offered an intriguing transatlantic contrast.
Britain's Mirror tabloid headline read "Royal Wedding Snub Sensation: Heir Rage."
The New York Post opted for "Queen to Skip Chuck Nups."

This dog was someones' pet and was rescued. Shocking to see how inhuman we humans are capable of being... Read the story Here
It's only your outrage that makes this type of thing unthinkable! Even the French government intervened after this story was widely publicized.

LONDON (Reuters) - The "flying" Ford Anglia used in the
Harry Potter films has been stolen from a film studio lot, police said on Friday.
"For those who have not seen the Harry Potter films, this is the car that flies in the movies and is very well known," a police spokesman said.
The blue Anglia went missing from South West Film Studios at St Agnes in the southwestern English county of Cornwall.
"The film prop was being stored under a tarpaulin. It was not in good condition and could not have been driven away under its own steam," the police spokesman said.
